The Sandblast Rally was an endurance event and my main goal was to finish. This being my first RallyMoto race, and the first ever sectional Rally (cars and bikes combined) event in the US, I had no idea of what to expect. Saturday morning at 8:30a.m. the cars went first leaving huge ruts in the sand that caused the bikes to flail all over the course. The first stage was pure fear, then as I felt more comfortable in the sand on a 420lb. bike I started having some fun even though the fear was always present. It's definitely a love-hate relationship with moments when you really question why you are there, and moments were you wouldn't want to be anywhere else. I played it conservative and ended up finishing 22 out of 30 bikes with 8 bikes dropping out due to crashes, mechanical failures and fatigue. The cars had an even higher attrition rate with 40% dropping out. One car only lasted about 100 yards off the starting line before they blew a clutch as well as months of training and wrenching. A support vehicle flipped causing about an hour delay for the bikes on the first stage. As the event went on it became an obstacle course littered with broken down cars and bikes. Navigation, calculating my stage/transit times, and avoiding penalties proved to be almost as challenging as the riding, especially towards the end of the day as I became more tired and dyslectic . When I reached the finish line at the Cheraw high school at around 6:30p.m. I was feeling really good, then I got off my bike and felt like I was still moving forward, kind of like a sit-and-spin bonus buzz.
