It looks like we all win. The bulbs are standard h-4 halogen. These are available at any motorcycle parts store in a range of upgrade options. Blue to bright white up to 130 watts. This is much better than the previous BMW I had as it took a special (order) bulb. Now I know this is a commuter gripe but come on, no helmet lock. Am I missing it, where is it?????
They are definitely nice looking pipes. I noticed them on your earlier pictures. Unfortunately Ill have to get 2 of everything. Down side of his and hers bikes. So I have the same problem as Kovrob. Plus, what is easier than drilling out the end cap hole and closing off the connection pipe. IF its as simple as that. If its not, Ill have to decide whether of not to go the whole hog or to reinstate it. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o> </o> Couldnt really care less about the cat. Its the can Im after. I realise in litres its not a big amount, but I should be able to fit all tools and spares for a big trip in 2 of them. That would make my life a lot easier. Keeping in mind I dont have these to go hard on, but travel on. <o> </o> Kovrob, cheers for the heads up on the right hand side can. Presumably its only spot welded. Ive got welding equipment but only a cheap Arc welder. My mate has a fabrication company so I could hit him up for some help if I get stuck. I could always get him to weld me up a pipe to fit the original end cap on. Should have a go on my own first off course. Not sure on the clogging. I know that people have dont a fair few thousand ks on leaded fuel with the can in. Which makes me think it wont clog. The lead will brake down the chemical coating on the mesh or whatever you call what they build a cat out of. <o> </o> I didnt like that idea about the heated wires either. Hence why I just re-wound the heated wire the other way and let if come out the way all the aftermarket guess have it.
Just for the record, I visited one of our fellow ADVers yesterday who had cleaned out his cat and closed off the side. The bike sounded great and was not nearly as loud as I expected. not all that much louder than my Staintune. I have a canister on the right and it adds room but the real bonus is in segregating the tools from other stuff. The net effect is as if you gained more room than you really did. Plus if I run around with no luggage at all I still have tools. Dan
No, it was oldhuskyrider. I think he gave you the run down in another thread. Two holes on the tire side with patches TIG welded back on. You can't see them. it's a cool bike.
Has anybody run without the fork brace ? Is it there because of the usual German engineering, you don't see many other makes using them. Pete
Hi. Love the Dakar. 2001 44000 Km The bike is still at it basic form. Would like to improve the suspensions.
I do not think I would run with out the brace. If the clearance is what you are worried about just raise it. I know a lot of bikes that add the brace for stability. They work.
I swear by them, that said it might be an interesting exercise; pull the brace and then hit some gravel roads and tarmac @ speed i.e. 55 to 65 plus, then let us know what you think.
I'm sure if this was advisable or safe, everyone would be doing it:huh . The brace is there to keep the forks from twisting around themselves in rough terrain. The wimpy F650 fork system is designed for road use and very limited offroad use. IF you want to get rid of the brace just get rid of the whole system and install a real offroad suspension. USD systems don't need a brace because they are designed using a much thicker stock, almost 50% thicker than the stock F650 tube, and the thickest section is on top, not swinging all of the extra weight down low. But if you do it, as always, film it for our amusement
My wife's 650 is just comming up on her 600 mile checkup. Dealer say's 4 hours labor. Can I do it myself? what is involved? I did my DR650 service without a hitch... the BMW can't be much harder can it? Cowboy2
Oil change and valve check mostly. Yes, you can do it yourself. Pretty much everything you need to know is available at www.f650.com
easy as pie do you have the service manual? also look here for a 12k svc http://advwisdom.hogranch.com/Wisdom/F650%20Service.html
Maybe not even a valve check, "No longer included in 1,000 km (approx. 600 miles) inspection as of frame no. ZE46710, ZF65870, ZH76000" That's from the schedule here, http://www.bmwgsclub.nl/schematics/F650GS-CS-2000 Maintenance Schedule.pdf You don't need to read the fault codes IMO otherwise like pie as JD points out.
What's the deal with the UNI filter? I can't one on UNI's site or online. Do you (or anyone) have a part number for the uni filter? I've seen one TT sells but it seems expensive. Is this just taking Uni foam and attaching it to a stock gasket? If so which filter?
