Been a while since I had any dealings with Garmin. To those who have bought Nuvi's which WILL do routes--in the last 2-3 years (NOT Zumos) : 1) Is Basecamp the *only option for route creation, or is Mapsource still available (i.e. loading the unit mapbase to your computer) 2) Is Basecamp decent for creating routes, or is it a royal PITA ? 3) If Mapsource is still an option with Nuvi's, how?? Is the software included with the purchase? Cause Garmin has sure taken it off their website. 4) Which model did you buy? Any other comments are appreciated. Some riding buddies suddenly got interested in ridin' & routin'. Thanks!
Hello, I'm no expert, but here goes: 1. you can use basecamp or mapsource. i believe mapsource cost money. i got a cd from somebody....base camp is free. 2. basecamp isnt so great, but it's waaaay easier to use than mapsource. 3. it used to come on a cd that you had to buy at the store, online, or with your garmin unit. whether or not that cd was included with your garmin models all depends..... 4.I have a nuvi 550. just suck it up and learn basecamp. you can learn 90% of it pretty quickly.
You can still get Mapsource if you want. It's no longer being developed, but some people still prefer it over BaseCamp. I have a Nuvi 500 with Mapsource but I actually do most of my route creation with the Harley Ride Planner available on the Harley website. It's super easy to use and completely web-based. You don't even have to ride a HD to use it. : Sent from my ADR6325 using Tapatalk 2
Not sure. It routes similarly but I believe the gps uploads are gpx. HRP also has avoidances and routes can be easily shared/saved/emailed. Sent from my ADR6325 using Tapatalk 2
Although rarely mentioned, I create routes in Mapquest - not to be confused with Mapsource - and send them to my Nuvi. Works quite well. The trick is to make sure to right click on the little red dot and 'make it a route stop' whenever you change your route from the one Mapquest creates for you.
I use Microsoft Streets and Trips software to make my custom routes for the Nuvi 770. Couldn't be easier to make a route than it is with this software. As someone pointed out, the trick is "force" the GPS to follow your custom route by inserting waypoints along the route.
