This file contains way points for all the cabins in Panamint Valley plus Butte Valley and Emigrant Pass plus tracks of the best way to get between them. You can find this and other area files of mine on GPSXchange.com
Great tracks, thinking of going down there in Feb to ride. I assume that any track that enters Death Valley must be done with a plated bike? Can you suggest any staging areas down there where I can dry camp with a 30 foot toyhauler? Preferably in the area of Trona or Valley Wells.
Must be careful in Feb, a lot of it can be snowed out. First I would suggest riding my Death Valley Rally on Feb 16-18 http://www.district37ama.org/dualsport/ridefliers/080216DVRally.pdf You will see a lot of it, then go back and see what you missed. Most roads in Panamint Valley are county roads adn plate is required. You can camp at Panamint Springs resort at north end (food, gas, cheap RV park), lots of places to camp on Indian Ranch road down to Ballarat and then on south toward goler. I don't think they would bother you at Valley Wells also places to camp along road to Sand and Gravel pit just north of Valley Wells. Basically it is all open desert, camp any where you want.
Did you see the scheduled second clean-up for the Chris Wicht(spelling?) Cabin? Feb 2 from what I've heard. They hauled something like 20 tons of steel out of there last time. It'd be nice if a few motorcycles showed up..I just can't get any time away from work right now.
This sounds very suspecious. This cabin was not listed on the BLM's Adopt-A-Cabin Program map. It was on a county road leading to private property in Panamint City that was closed to motorized travel. All of which is in multipul use area outside of Wilderness. The Cabin burnt down and now the BLM wants to remove all signs of human activity. Sounds like a new Build-A-Wilderness program.
That's exactly what it is, Jerry. It's out of our hands..it's going to be wiped off the map. That's why it's a good thing to have the motorsports community jump in and help to offset the extreme left. There is some motovation for the 4x4 crowd in Surprise..they want the trail opened.
Chris Wicht's original cabin is long gone. Back in the sixties it was no more than a pond and a couple trees. Camped there many times. If it goes back to a pond and the trees I'll be happy. It pissed me off to see that squater in there trashing the place up. Pissed me off even more to see Suprise closed to all but foot traffic, over a law suit. I wrote the head Lawyer (28 year old female) who brought on the suit and ripped her a new ass.
Well, it's better than having the Sheriff's department blow it to bits with guns for "training" like they did Clair Camp in Pleasant Canyon. I once got ran out of Surprise Canyon by a miner with a .45 in my gut in the mid 80's. I believe he was the same guy that did time for smearing grease on the rocks out there and causing a few four wheelers to end up on their lids. I totally agree with larryboy. We have to show our faces and get involved in the process, otherwise we are marginalized totally and have no voice or influence in decisions that shape the scope and future of our hobby. I certainly plan to get more involved if and when I have the time. As it is, I have to show my support with my wallet via Blue Ribbon Coalition, District 37, CORVA, etc.. Thanks CA Stu
The TinBenders were out in force. The latest clean-up is done. I forget the tonnage hauled out, but 8-9 burned out junk cars got drug down to the flats by Team Redbull Rawk Krawler. I read that the BLM was actually paying the greens to come help and the 4x4 community showed up and went 7-1 on the greens.
Looks like the Friends of the Panamint Valley were a driving force with major backing from the TinBenders and Point Magu 4x4 club. http://www.fopv.org/cleanup.html Sorry for hijacking your GPS thread, Jerry.
Hmmm....how come I can't open this file with Mapsource v8? It tells me it's not a valid dile when I download/open.
My Mapsource won't open GPX files either? I just save them to a folder and load them into the GPS and they work...I'm a GPS beginner.
Well, I checked my Nav II out and it has V.8, so that's good, but being new to this, I guess I don't know how to download to my GPS. It keeps telling me I need to be in "Host" mode, and can't find that setting anywhere. Also tells me it's found a device, but it's "not capable of this function"... May have something to do with it being a BMW unit? :huh
Hijack!!! You should ask these questions about Mapsource on the general GPS section not West! Do you have Mapsource 6.13 or later?
...sowwy... I'm thiinkin my screen said something abot 4.0 sumpin sumpin...I bet this fices it so thanks!!
Jerry, A big thank you for the cabin tracks. I may be running out of time this spring, what with the rising temperatures, but I'll put your tracks to good use. It will be fun to push, literally, the Big Bison up these trails. Next investigation is to search for you waypoints for the area between Mammoth and Bridgeport. Dave
