950 SE-R vs 690 Enduro

Very true, I also ride a 08, bought in June out the box. Used to drool over the orange framed R's, but that's gone and won't change mine for the world. Yeh longer trips are a slight pain and as mentioned, two up is very uncomfortable. But bring on the winding dirt roads or beaches and you'll have a smile on your face as big as the canyon. Wouldn't mind something bigger for commuting though.

Just bought the 2012 690R and did 260 miles mostly dirt over 2 days Bike slightly heavier than my 525 but will cruse at 70 mph. Suspension needs to be stiffen up for off road but I love the bike

I rode the Nevada TAT in 2009 on a Super Enduro


and the Colorado TAT in 2010 on a Super Enduro and had a blast on both rides.


The Super Enduro is a handful to pick up but it seems like the only time I dropped it was when I was trying to dab a foot down. A riding buddy 30 years my elder told me the secret to riding the big orange monster: “keep your feet on the pegs and twist the right hand"!

If you're riding dirt in Colorado the 690 is better. The big problem with the 950 is that you'll spend most of your time trying to prove how much it can do for such a big bike - which is a lot but that gets old after a while. It can do pretty much all that the 690 can but you'll just work a lot harder.

Another thing is that once the big bike is moving it's very hard to stop - especially on gravel. That's important. In single track it isn't close - the small bike rules. The advantage of the big bike is in a straight line when there's a lot of traction and you're accelerating - that's pretty much it.

Most of going fast is going slow later and quicker - not really going faster. Most of the enjoyment of riding comes from not having to work really hard to enjoy yourself. Of course the thrill of the 950 when it's hooked up is undeniable - but rare and fleeting.

If you are considering a 690 or 950SE then I would definitely not consider a 625 or 640 over weight and under powered I use mine to commute back and forth to work off road its pretty lack luster heavy shakes like crazy Get the SE no FI "Issues" simple and proven

However, as bad as I want a 690 or Hoosabitch 570, I can't fathom the idea of selling my SE to get either. Having done some stupid stuff on the SE, trying to prove what it can do, I would rather just KNOW it can do those things in case I need to, not to try and prove that it can.

I thought when I bought my berg I would spend more time riding and less time wrenching, Ha was I ever wrong well I think I pushed that bike farter then I rode it. 23 hrs on it when I sold it spent 6 months off/on at the dealer 1 emc 1 complete wiring harness 3 fuel pump 2 injectors... no thanks they can have that pile
