photo from yesterday, top ride, mostly dirt, plenty of thrills. www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=674851 Cheers Baza
Yep, both went well, John's TT600 has just been rebuilt & goes like stink! :huh Maccas XT600 is in need of some TLC but is still quite capable of holding it's own in mixed company! Interesting mix of bikes yesterday, [check out the thread], 2 x F650GS', 650 V-Strom with XR front end, DR650 with full kit, XT600, TT600 & my old XS650SH 'Tourer'. :eek1 Had a ball, Tumorrama Trig hill was like riding on ballbearings! easier coming down then going up, very corregated & deep gravel [always interesting], even the guys with Dunlop 606's [knobby] had trouble, I just put the XS in 1st & let it find it's own pace, not a major drama. This is a Dunlop K460 that I run on the rear on the XS [130x16"], has bit less tread now! Have to watch out for Blue boys soon! Cheers Baza
Getting ready for this summers roadtrip. I bought it in December and have reworked alot, added the bills, which made up for 1500$ spent in spares, yet cosmetically, it looks the same :/ Hopefully it will change for the better :)
Hi Guys, Gee, most of the bikes here are so.....clean! And beautiful, too! Mine, otoh, gets washed when it rains.....and, being in the Pacific Northwest, it rains a lot! Enclosed is a shot of us up on the side of Mt. St. Helen's, our famous volcano and notorious tourist trap..... She is a '77"D" with a '75 tank, and currently an '80 engine, since her real engine is being rebuilt, if I ever find the time to finish it up. I've had her since March of 1978, and she has always been my "go to" bike, for just about anything. Gotta love XS's!!
Hi Guys, Thanks! The chair is a 1965 "Spirit of America Sport Sidecar", and I've got old Cycle and Cycle World mags with adverts for it in them. Kind of fun. I got it from some folks who had it on a Harley, and it was too light--they kept flying it. I run a car battery behind the seat, and that suffices for ballast, plus it is usually loaded with camping gear or a Grandchild or two..... The XS likes the chair, but the rear wheel also likes to be respoked every 10,000 miles or so. I guess I still need to further fine-tune the lean-out and toe-in, but she sure feels neutral going down the road. If nothing else, it makes life interesting, and keeps me out of bars......
Had a homemade chair on a '74 quite a few years back ['81?], felt a bit underpowered but the chair was pretty heavy & wide track as well! Photo? HMMMMM, I'll be back in a minute! Almost identical to the chair I built for the waterbottle, ['79], photo my father riding it on the farm. Just found that photo of XS650 '74 with the chair, yep ugly fella is me [before the grey] If I build another one, there will be heaps more thought go into the design for a start, track width same as a landcruiser? Leading Link frontend? the list goes on! Cheers Baza
Today I am going to try and make my own set of stainless highpipes. Hunter: How does your right pipe clear the kickstarter?
See if I can find a photo or two, back in two. Hope those two photos do the job, the pipes were made by me farting around with some spare pipe, shed pipebender & stick welding! Like to make some that travel closer to the tank, but these do the job nicely! Though the fit between oilstick & exhaust is close for inspection purposes! Cheers Baza
Thanks for those pictures. I completely neglected space for the oil dipstick, so I might go with a different design, one like you're wanting to try. This is what I'd like to end up with. https://fredsgarage.smugmug.com/photos/1233560521_CuTD7-XL.jpg Went by a place today that does fittings, they could only get 38mm. OD in 1.25mm or 2.00mm thickness, what do you reckon Gordon?
Dam metric system We tried that out for a week or so back in the 80's here in the states but it didn't stick Went back to our colonist ways, give'em an inch and we'll take a mile (don't know what that is in mm and kilometers). I make my pipes for stock motors out of 1 1/2" od .065 wall (thats 16ga) thick tube. To make collars just get pipe thats 1 1/2" on the inside.
I'm not quite as fussy but will try anything that's not tied down though I'm getting quite pedantic about my workmanship [improving but still room for more sofistication anyway!] The XS likes the chair, but the rear wheel also likes to be respoked every 10,000 miles or so. I guess I still need to further fine-tune the lean-out and toe-in, but she sure feels neutral going down the road. If nothing else, it makes life interesting, and keeps me out of bars...... Is your rear wheel 18" or 16", better off with a 16" laced wheel, shorter spokes - less stress & movement I've found over the years of playing with XS's. Cheers Baza
What are the collars outside diameter, how long are they and how far up the pipe are they? If you could tell me that you'd save me the trouble of taking the bike apart again :) But I understand if you don't.
Sure I do this to make money but always help when I can, it's good karma Outside is 1.900mm x 865mm long and are about 700mm from end of pipe.
I have a feeling that those measurements are a bit out :) Edit: My biggist concern right now is actually getting to buy the pipes, they don't sell to private persons, so I am figuring something out.
