Spring Break on the Crooked River March 27-30, 2014.
It's that time again ADVers; Time to start thinking of Spring before we all go nucking futs. I know what some of you are thinking: A Central Oregon Campout?.......in MARCH?!?!? "You must be crazy" :deal. Well, Jimmy Buffet's logic would suggest that "If we weren't all Crazy, we'd all go insane". Remember, he's the same guy that says "It's always 5:00 somewhere". I think he's on to something. No, I'm SURE he's on to something. Have you EVER seen him NOT smiling? (or partying? :freaky). We all must have our idols.

Place: Chimney Rock Campground; South-end Group Area
    [IMG]

South of Prineville on Hwy 27, heading down towards the Prineville Reservoir, is a nine mile section of BLM land designated as the Lower Crooked Wild & Scenic River with 11 campgrounds with NO FEES before April 1st!!!!!! Last year we got lucky with the weather. REALLY lucky :norton 'Twas awesome sunny & warm Spring weather. The other years? Ummmm...Not so much. But, it's never really sucked with the right attitude.....and the right whiskey (is there a wrong whiskey?) :1drink

    Here's the official camp-out rules:
    ..............(crickets).........
    Ya got all that?
No "list". No "maybes". No "on-the-fence". No shit.
Come and have fun....or not. Whatever. Y'all are welcome. Even YOU :deal Room for Motorhomes, room for Toy Haulers, Pickups with trailers, room for tents, room for wives, room for girlfriends, mistresses and dogs. We're an accommodating bunch, we just wanna have fun. Millican OHV is less than 10 miles away, Oregon's ONLY non-paved State Hwy begins just South of the reservoir, sweet twisty & empty pavement, rocky & muddy goodness and buttery smooth dirt are everywhere around us. Big Bike rides, little bike rides, sport bikes and sport tourers. Even Harleys will find good stuff (if you can handle the nightime campfire heckling). There is no wrong bike (is there ever?). Go 10 miles, go 500 miles. Then come back to camp and enjoy the company of others with similar attitudes.

This is year #4, with as many years left as I'm still riding. And/or breathing.

    OK, then......Who's IN????

are you gonna let your hair grow long, but keep erratically shaving your face?
    Q. "what's the difference between a duck?"
    A. "both his legs are twice the same!"

Did you mean,,, like that, kinda,,or sumpthing else?
are you walking to work, or packing your lunch?
"The machine-guns on the top of the boxcars are there for your protection!"
Peeing on the ground does not claim this spot as your OWN private tent spot,,but peeing on the entire area may discourage others from encroachment into your "zone".
I think I'll go out and pee in the snow,,write your name!

    YOUR NAME!,,,
I better pee in cursive,, can't handle the control for the printed word!

    what was the question?

Maybe, just maybe, will make it this year. The hard part is, that's usually when the desert east of here is absolutely perfect riding!:D

I'm 98.672% sure I'm going to make it to this shindig. There is a lot of dirt between the Snake River and the Crooked River. Every year I've thought I should head over there and never made it.

This years spring break at Crooked River was the best segway into spring that I can remember. Rode into Prineville one day and the temperature on the local bank sign read 70 degrees. It was good for the soul, I tell ya!

Hated missing it last year, but WILL make it this year! That campout is one of my favorites!

Stupid Video taken from the top of one of the local hills, to right down into camp in the Canyon. Even has a few guest stars at the end.

I'll bring an extra blanket and sleeping pad for him..and you too, Wibby. If my enclosed trailer makes it here, y'all can have that for the weekend. If I ride, well, then you'll be cold and drunk on the hard ground with us. Either way, it sounds like a great excuse for another great ride through Ashwood !

yeah, but the riding does not suck here....and WE'RE here.
    Top that :getiton

To be fair, the snowy pic was over a Mt Hood pass, a long ways from the Crooked River. But...ya just never know. And you just can't lose, it'll still be fun, even if we're all cuddled up in one trailer to escape it

You guys have the better ride TOO the campground. From Bend it's Mehhh.
Y'all are just scratching the surface of the goods out there! It's too bad Roberts Rd is closed till April.
I'll go if some FF's will follow me out to Hampton for a burger. It's a good loop around Glass Butte [with a hill climb up the back side that Punkin can make up]from there, then back to camp via GI Ranch.

No road, but there IS a way to the top from here!

    IN! Blindly even.
Don't know where that is, don't know how rough your route is, I'll just assume it's not a classic big bike ride (too many miles) since you're on an XR. Sounds perfect :clap

Still wanna ride out that Ford Road I've seen many of you post to get there, but if maybe Trout Creek is open of snow through the upper Ochoco (doubtful) I would have to do that.

As you can see, I was already IN, even before you edited your post to make sure Punkin was welcome. I'll take any opportunity to follow a local around :nod
