I recently acquired a neat little bike, once sold from the Sears catalog. Another advrider offered this bike, and I couldn't refuse. I think the last year Sears sold these was 1967 or 1968. Even though I personally don't remember seeing them (3 yrs old), I have found some internet pics of the catalog ads. http://www.vomund.com/gilera/marketing/brochure1.pdf Starts first kick, and rides like new. All original, down to the tool kit. Some may enjoy seeing one of these again ! 1965 Sears Gilera 106SS
Mine (the one on the right) came in a box from Monkey Wards. My neighbor ordered it and put it together and rode it and I bought it from him in 1970 and still have it! After all the abuse it took it still runs great, and I am going to do a minor restoration this spring and use it for errands. Fun life indeed!
That's a good score, Don! That must be the one you locked in a while back but had to wait to get it home, no?
No, when I said mid restoration, I meant very mild. Maybe some new cables and sprockets, touch up some stuff, new tires and possibly a new muffler. All the scratches and wear marks tell a story, so they are staying like they are.
Vern, talk to Joe at Cosmopolitan Motors he'll have the parts you are looking for. Plan on him testing your patience though, they are ridiculously disorganized over there. Here's my Monkey Wards 250 - will be in the Flea Market this spring: Dlrides- what you've got there is arguably the best of the catalog bikes, it's gorgeous, and I'm totally jealous
They were back in the 60's and 70's too. Amazing amount of virtual unobtanium they have though Post some pics!!
Those are cool, I have some stuff that came from Sears back in the day. Including some shotguns as well as some outboard motors.
Great topic DLRIDES, I've got a couple of the 124's. Great little machines. One has only 39 miles total, but the paint and chrome were weathered badly. So,it became my 1967 Italian Army "124 Militare" Gilera after a few zillion hours of transformation effort...... Sam in IN KX100,DRZ125,XR400,KX500,Ural G/U
I have the 50cc version of the same - as you can imagine, it's a tire-burning monster. Someday I need to make it roadworthy...
I don't know how much it holds (3 gallons maybe - it's thin), but if it achieves it's advertised milage it should go over 500 miles on a tank -I suspect that's a bit optimistic. It won't achieve the advertised 50mph unless it's downhill. Stolen from this site: http://www.piston.com/historical/mward.html Riverside® Sport Bike Jump aboard and go! Fireball 50? Twas the first bike I owned by myself (shared the Honda Z50s with my bro'). Mine was red. Given to me by a school bus driver. All I had to do was pick it up at the local Moto Guzzi dealer (Halley's in Brunswick, MD - long gone) and get it running. That little bike planted the Italian bike seed that grew into a nut (me)!
