    I checked that group buy and it closed 2 days ago. Argh! For the price, it's nearly worth it to just grab it, build it up and have her ride it for a month. If she doesn't like it, no big loss.

    There was no 'buy' link on the page. How do you get in late?

    so I decided to mash some ratios in sql, I dunno why, this came to me today.

    tables:
    • crankset: (i integer, f numeric);
    • cassette: (j integer, r numeric);

    populate...
    • insert into crankset values (1,48),(1,38),(1,28);
    • insert into cassette values (1,11),(1,12),(1,14),(1,16),(1,18),(1,21),(1,26),(1,32);
    • insert into cassette values (2,13),(2,14),(2,15),(2,17),(2,19),(2,21),(2,24),(2,26);

    so ratios with my current cassette (j=1)...
    • select f,r,to_char(f/r,'0.99') as ratio from crankset join cassette on true where i=1 and j=1 order by 3;
      ..f | r | ratio
      ----+----+-------
      28 | 32 | 0.88
      28 | 26 | 1.08
      38 | 32 | 1.19
      28 | 21 | 1.33
      38 | 26 | 1.46
      28 | 18 | 1.56
      28 | 16 | 1.75
      38 | 21 | 1.81
      48 | 26 | 1.85
      28 | 14 | 2.00
      38 | 18 | 2.11
      48 | 21 | 2.29
      28 | 12 | 2.33
      38 | 16 | 2.38
      48 | 18 | 2.67
      38 | 14 | 2.71
      48 | 16 | 3.00
      38 | 12 | 3.17
      48 | 14 | 3.43
      38 | 11 | 3.45
      48 | 12 | 4.00
      48 | 11 | 4.36

    (I didn't want to teach SQL about crossing over, so I manually deleted the 48:32 and 28:11)

    my new cassette (j=2)
    • select f,r,to_char(f/r,'0.99') as ratio from crankset join cassette on true where i=1 and j=2 order by 3;
      ..f | r | ratio
      ----+----+--------
      28 | 26 | 1.08
      28 | 24 | 1.17
      28 | 21 | 1.33
      38 | 26 | 1.46
      38 | 24 | 1.58
      28 | 17 | 1.65
      38 | 21 | 1.81
      38 | 19 | 2.00
      48 | 21 | 2.29
      48 | 19 | 2.53
      38 | 14 | 2.71
      48 | 17 | 2.82
      38 | 13 | 2.92
      48 | 15 | 3.20
      48 | 14 | 3.43
      48 | 13 | 3.69

    and, ok, this has a few duplicate gears, so I'm gonna cherry pick and delete those. meh, maybe I'm better off with the wider range cassette

    ok, now if I stick with this 8 speed, and do a 50-34 front...

    • insert into crankset values (2,50),(2,34);
    • select f,r,to_char(f/r,'0.99') as ratio from crankset join cassette on true where i=2 and j=2 order by 3;
      ..f | r | ratio
      ----+----+--------
      34 | 26 | 1.31
      34 | 24 | 1.42
      34 | 21 | 1.62
      34 | 19 | 1.79
      34 | 17 | 2.00
      34 | 15 | 2.27
      50 | 21 | 2.38
      50 | 19 | 2.63
      50 | 17 | 2.94
      50 | 15 | 3.33
      50 | 14 | 3.57
      50 | 13 | 3.85

    also trimmed for the extremes plus double shifts
    ok, I lose two gears at the bottom, but the top range seems much saner.

    whats this look like with my original cassette?

    • select f,r,to_char(f/r,'0.99') as ratio from crankset join cassette on true where i=2 and j=1 order by 3;
      ..f | r | ratio
      ----+----+--------
      34 | 32 | 1.06
      34 | 26 | 1.31
      34 | 21 | 1.62
      34 | 18 | 1.89
      34 | 16 | 2.13
      50 | 21 | 2.38
      50 | 18 | 2.78
      50 | 16 | 3.13
      50 | 14 | 3.57
      50 | 12 | 4.17
      50 | 11 | 4.555

    hmmm. need more gears! hmmm, 10 speed 12-30 ?!? oooh.

    • insert into cassette values (3,12),(3,13),(3,14),(3,15),(3,17),(3,19),(3,21),(3,24),(3,27),(3,30);
    • select f,r,to_char(f/r,'0.99') as ratio from crankset join cassette on true where i=2 and j=3 order by 3;
      ..f | r | ratio
      ----+----+--------
      34 | 30 | 1.13
      34 | 27 | 1.26
      34 | 24 | 1.42
      34 | 21 | 1.62
      34 | 19 | 1.79
      34 | 17 | 2.00
      34 | 15 | 2.27
      50 | 21 | 2.38
      34 | 14 | 2.43
      50 | 19 | 2.63
      50 | 17 | 2.94
      50 | 15 | 3.33
      50 | 14 | 3.57
      50 | 13 | 3.85
      50 | 12 | 4.17

    now there's a gear set I could live with! :lol3

    ok, did I drive you guys crazy enough yet? :p

    I went from 53/39 to compact 50/34 a couple months back and love it.

    Basically, the Ruby is going to have the rider sitting a bit lower in the bike, via the BB drop and shorter ST length. And, the additional BB drop may not be such a good thing, with longer crank arms (not sure of what we're using, as he was looking at framesets).

    If you believe the marketing for women-specific, all women are short and have longer legs and shorter torso than men. However, not all women are built that way.

    I know "MrsSpout" is an accomplished cyclist. I figure as long as the TT and HT length are good, the rest can be adjusted, as she knows what feels right to her.

    The Pedal Force stuff looks nice. "Gummee!!" has mentioned them, in the past.

    Don't forget Carbon Zone.

    Welcome aboard!

    If you hit 'shiny things' there's a few other threads about bicycles too. ...and one BIG one in JM entitled 'Dear Bicycle Riders.' :augie

    ...do us mainlanders a favor, wouldya? Take pics of your rides so when its nasty, cold and miserable here we can remember what the sun looks like. :thumb

    edited to add: if y'all are looking for inexpensive carbon frames, check out velobuild.com too. More group buys. Stay away from alibaba and deal directly with the bigger names that post to velobuild. LOTS of scams on alibaba. :nod

    As a note: Ritte's carbon road frame is a pedalforce with a neat paint job. :nod Their carbon crosser is another Taiwanese or Chinese carbon with a paint job. My Full Tilt Boogie is essentially the same as November's carbon crosser (as well as an FM023 (IIRC. I looked it up once to get another frame and promptly lost it again))

    yea, I'm lame and did it in excel :( but i did do lookup tabels to quickly switch between cassettes for calculation of gear spacing.....

    i wonder how well i could type on a wireless keyboard using areobars on a trainer.....:freaky

    ts'ok. wife has a whole drawer full of left over brownie pins. don't need any more (daughter is a senior scout and camp leader). Those cookies will still be in the same condition in a millenium, I swear.

    and speech to text works just about exactly as well as it did in 1980. except its a bit faster at getting it equally wrong, unless you A) do extensive voice training and B) speak in a very clear slow consistent voice that you used for training.

    Well, I've got a pretty thick southern drawl and my Droid does a fair job of translating to text, so I figure it's improved quite a bit since I last used it in college. :D

    Still easier than an abacus, slide rule and marble composition notebook while pedaling. :lol3

    Some of the voice recognition software developed for medical transcription isn't too shabby, but I digress.

    I'm taking the LeMond out for it's first offical ride tomorrow. It would have happened a lot sooner, but I had to undergo surgery last Thursday for a small bowel obstruction. :bluduh

    She's definitely longer in the torso, so a women-specific geometry may not be the best. :dunno

    I really wanted to surprise her with a new build, but I'm not sure that's the best plan now. Two days ago she was walking around the bike store with her dad and saw a new Trek that she's got her eye on. *sigh*

    my wife, from Boston, has the same problem. I grab the phone click the contact list, click dial, and hand her back the phone after about the 5th round of "Did you mean "BLAH BLAH". NO! Ok, Dialing BLAH BLAH. ' :baldy

    I just emailed the guy and asked if I could still get in and he said no problem. Based on emails from last year his name is Ming and the email is info@pedalforce.com.

    Did a little over 45 miles today. Just cruising, breaking in the new WTB Volt seat. Ate a cheese steak sandwich 8 miles in because I did not eat breakfast. It was like an anchor. Still averaged 15mph without effort. Was a nice cruise.

    Got to see a Kestrel on a street lamp which was cool.

    I also took earplugs this time and it was very pleasant.

    Reminded me why I always wore them on the motorcycle.

    Going to visit home in two weeks(NY). Might try one more time for the century but the temps keep creeping up during the day.

    Also of note is my neck. It does get sore from looking ahead. Is there a cure other than recumbent? :deal
