"Blinders (UK), also known as blinkers (US) are a piece of horse tack that prevent the horse seeing to the rear and, in some cases, to the side. " :brow

Everyone who earns their money working in college football, including university presidents, and school fans have their blinkers firmly fastened.

What the blinkers apparently prevent them from seeing is how the rest of the world views their malignant hypocrisy. Sanctimonious suits spout garbage about values and education, while they hope nobody sees them groveling for lucre and rolling around in the mud.

But, they don't trust him. It was reported today that he has a $10m buyout clause. Even if someone wants him, very few can or would spend $10m + a salary to get him.

    Here's where we are.

The University of North Carolina disavows a research professor's work because she says it shows that that between 8% and 10% of the school's football and basketball players read below a 3rd grade level.

Thing is, the University itself paid for her research. It provided her with the data she used. And she shared her data and methodology with them not once but twice.

So an academic institution wants to stifle research and learning -- the very essence of its existence -- because it's embarrassed about its sports programs.

It's a betrayal of the values they pretend to champion. For sports.

Well, if she could write the university a $100 million dollar check every year, she could say the earth was flat and they would back her. But since she is a debit on the balance sheet, she will be and do what they want. That is life. Don't like it, be the boss.

I don't think they are pretending anything; the President's job is to promote all aspects of the college, and strong sports programs are part of that dynamic. Are they going to promote academia at the appropriate time? Absolutely. Are they going to promote sports at the appropriate time? Absolutely. Are they going to try and make it look like the blend is seamless? Absolutely. Do I want to watch a bunch of nerds play anything? Nope. So, some smart kids can't ball. They have other talents.

Are you suggesting we don't need more gym teachers?

It is an elitest position to suggest they don't belong for that reason. If they are meeting NCAA regulations, who cares if they learn by chapter book? NC is diversified, they cover the gamut of edumacashin. They are a village. If someone's rich Daddy, or communist benefactor, or whomever can pay some moron's way into higher institutions..from which they get great benefit down the road from, .those fellows from the block have a right to display their talents for the school; and make the school as much money, or more, as the "here is a side check for my dopey kid crowd." Who are also important to the school because it takes a lot of money to run one to support the debit's for the bright kids without exceptional financial resources. High ideals pay for squat. Where the rubber meets the road is what matters. A good steward of their university gets that.

And if they never graduate or make the pro's? Well, there are a lot of folks like that, that never play sports, read fine and never get their degree. At least the poor dumb jocks got their shot to do their best and have a chance at it. For that they owe the university a good deal of thanks for giving them that chance.

And of course your source, holds little credibility on accuracy in journalism. So, the whole thing is suspect from the get go without verification from a higher source.

University's are a BUSINESS. They do what's financially best for the UNIVERSITY. To expect anything else is a bit naive on your part. The U of A didn't fire Bobby because he was of low moral character, they fired him because he would have cost them a lot of money in lawsuits over hiring his girlfriend over 700 other candidates that weren't banging him, to a state job.

    You are clueless.

They are violating their avowed mission by stifling research. It's like McDonald's suppressing french fry sales.

Looks like it escaped your attention that the University of North Carolina is the nation's first public university. Not a private business.

Their mission statement, now dripping with irony:

"The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the nation’s first public university, serves North Carolina, the United States and the world through teaching, research and public service. We embrace an unwavering commitment to excellence as one of the world’s great research universities...

"With lux, libertas — light and liberty — as its founding principles, the University has charted a bold course of leading change to improve society and to help solve the world’s greatest problems."

Apparently, illiteracy is one of the world's greatest problems only when it doesn't involve your basketball and football players.

And quietly in Big Ten country, this lurks.

Offense greatly improved over the course of the season, returning 8 of 11 starters, possibly 9 if Fowler appeals for eligibility. Number 1 defense in the land, losing some starters but much of the backups have proven to be quite serviceable when they have had their spot. Retains Mark Dantonio with a healthy raise and the entire coaching staff, including Narduzzi, who was being looked at for HC positions elsewhere.

Markus Golden:deal and Shane Ray. Golden didn't play the snaps that Sam or Ealy did, but his projected numbers would have him right there.

Since Texas is going to need a couple of recruiting years to get their groove back......
this is what they will be doing at Texas Memorial next year to maintain their fanbase.
