I will be posting all my motorcycle travel videos in a shorter, High def versions. I am currently going through 8 hours and trying to get it down to 1 hour. Part one coming very soon.
I am reediting our travel videos to make them nice and HD and short. This is part 1 from last summer traveling by motorcycle from Montreal to BC Canada. Its only 6 minutes please have a look. More short around the world videos to follow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjfcFTqPudI&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Part 2 of our short, HD around the world travel videos. This video was taken as we road our KLR650 motorcycle across BC Canada In this video Chasing a moose off the road, cold mountain river swims, trying to cross a rushing river, camping in the middle of nowhere http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCUDO4UWZZo&feature=youtube_gdata_player
In this video I explain how all the pasts of the solar thermal car work together to power the wheels and propel the car. Please provide feedback if something doesn't look like it will function properly. Also let me know if you want more information on the design. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXTDb6htbDU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I jump into a super hot, hot spring in Northern Bc. Liard hot springs is natural and free everyone should go there. Around the world Adventure part 3 has more footage of Liard hot springs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDdppvGUBQc&feature=youtube_gdata_player
This is a short video of me running my first solar thermal university workshop. The students are building their own solar thermal power units to boil water using sunlight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPxWRoFGGio&feature=youtube_gdata_player
This is the third short, HD video of our trip around the world. This video is from northern BC at Liard hot springs. This natural hot springs is free and in the middle of the woods. It has caves, water falls, rivers and very hot water. Everyone should visit it at least once. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utNQdBQjQcs
Solar thermal powered car video part 23, In this video I explain how the solar car will turn into a camper, how the mirror will be covered for high speed aerodynamic travel. I also go over a model of the solar car I am building with all working parts including the steam engine. This will be presented at a renewable energy conference here in La Paz Mexico. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS6YQxVVPNw&feature=youtube_gdata_player
In this video I show how I built the mirror support structures for the solar thermal car scale model. Many of these building techniques will be used to build the full scale solar thermal car. The mirror curve accuracy has been greatly improved from my previous solar thermal devices. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKIpW_Ym8nc&feature=youtube_gdata_player
cool man - Still following along. What is your projected timeline like, when do you anticipate moving from small scale to full scale?
I still have alot of small scale testing to do. I will be making my own hot oil pump and boiler loop. Also a small steam engine. We are hoping to move to an apartment with a garage in the next few months (maybe December?). This new place will have a garage for me to build the large solar trailer. Then we are thinking 6 months to a year of full scale building and testing. If there are big problems with the design in small scale testing it might take longer. I am taking my time so I don't start building and invest in materials and then find a better design too late. Thanks for following.
In this video the first test outside with the solar car mirror model hit 139c. Also showing how to apply aluminum foil to make a solar power mirror from plywood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkNzaIYDWnE&feature=em-upload_owner
Around the world Adventure, short, HD part 4 In this video we canoe down the yukon river, camp on islands and help care for native animal at the Yukon Wildlife preserve. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aopeMGsFUo&feature=youtube_gdata_player
In this video I heat up oil to 199 degrees Celsius using only sunlight. A glass tube around the metal pipe allowed focused sun energy in and insulated the pipe by trapping air around it. This shows me that there is more then enough energy in this design to propel the solar thermal powered car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SgxRPVX1dY&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I presented the model of my solar thermal powered car at the science and engineering exhibition at the University here in La Paz. I was very happy with how many people were interested in the design. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYon3ehEjAg&feature=youtube_gdata_player
On the second day of the solar thermal workshop one group was able to heat a pipe up to 150c using only cardboard, aluminum foil and the sun. We tested the other units and ensured the focused light formed a line of concentrated light at the middle of the pipe. http://youtu.be/5o0yVoFsrwg
In this solar thermal powered car video I compare the heat when the model mirror is fixed and automatically sun tracks. http://youtu.be/b108x4TTgGo
In this test I use the small solar thermal car model to compare the temperature with and without glass and trapped air insulation. Half the pipe is in a glass pipe and the other half is not. The pipe receives the same amount of focused light but the glass section was about 20c hotter. http://youtu.be/SaG4ZgdaueA
so you are making / capturing / storing heat - I get that. how are you going to move that to propulsion? do you plan to make electricity via thermocouples, or by rotating a turbine? very interesting, just wondering what the next step would be to make movement.
Thanks for the great question. My first test will be with the large test model I am building. Below is a video of the structure and mirror I just completed. In this test unit I will have an oil loop that will move the heat in the pipe to a heat exchanger. I will use the heat from the oil to boil water and build up pressure. This pressure will power a tesla steam turbine which will power a generator. The electricity form the generator will be stored in a 12V battery. I will then be able to calculate the power and efficiency of the system. The solar car mirror will be 16 times longer so I can assume it will make 16 times more power. For the solar thermal car we will charge batteries and then drive using a large 25hp electric motor. I will use any data I get from the test unit to modify the solar car design if necessary. http://youtu.be/nGFXs7LQlr4
