Okay, I admit it. I just bought a KLE. I promise it's just for use on the road. As a sort of penance ( and just for fun) I have a set of 606's coming for my 2005 KLR . "Different tools for different jobs." That's what I keep telling myself. How am I doing? Cheers
why would you buy a KLE just for the road.....???? I like the KLE... woulda bought one except for the small petrol tank and their relative rarity here so parts and farkles much less common than on the KLR..... enjoy the engine :)
I was successful in trading my K&N for a filter cage in the flea market. We both thought we got the better deal, as it should be.
Us long time desert folks learned long long time ago that K&N is not the way to go. If you contact K&N directly they will tell you to add their prefilter for dusty conditions. OEM or Uni work very well when properly oiled with filter oil. I like Maxima FFT brand.
I agree I am not a fan. Back in my ATV days I could see where a properly installed and oiled k&n would allow a fine layer of dust through. No I have no pictures or lab proof but I know what I saw. I also learned on my Bandit 1200 that k&n filters do not like the rain even with pre filters on..again YMMV but that is my humble opinion
It will clog in dusty conditions and not let your bike run at all. I have seen it happen twice, and both times it was out in the desert, right where you need your bike to run! :eek1 Foam filters will let dirt through when they get saturated with dirt, but at least your bike will still run. I live in the same town as K&N, I'm a big fan of their products for many other applications, I just prefer UNI for my KLR.
What is the "deep hole" thing you are talking about, and how can you tell about it from the VIN? I have never liked or used K&N filters. They will stop bugs and gravel, and maybe coarse sand, but not dust. And more air flow leans out the air/fuel mixture. I use either stock or UNI filters on my XT225, and soak them in engine oil. After a days desert riding, so much dirt will have caked onto the outside that it soaks up the oil, and falls off in chunks. But I have never seen dirt make it all the way through. The oil is what stops and holds the dirt, not the foam. I remove the filter, wash it out in gas, resoak it with oil, and put it back.
Thanks. That's a good list. I honestly am not sure of the previous maintenance of the bike, but I do know that some crazy adventurer rode it to Belize. It's seen quite a few kilometers. I just recently put a new sprocket on and checked the other one for wear. I'll probably need to replace the wheel bearings. I'm also confident my fork seals are good to go.
Hey KLR guy's anyone know what happened to Dual Star adventure motorcycle parts from Washington, i was on their website and the phone order phone is disconnected?
I've never dealt with them, but their site hasn't been updated in over two years, and prior to that, they had a large number of complaints against them for orders that never shipped, or arrived MONTHS after being placed.
Even at their peak they were a very small, family run shop. I remember they seemed to be overwhelmed all the time. What are you looking for?
I hope it's not the mirrors. You could probably see more outta' the reflection off the black paint of your brake reservoir... .
I have bent my footpeg mount / brackets both times I've dropped the bike. I'm thinking of making them smaller so they don't break, but it's been suggested that they may be a "sacrificial" part that bends so that the frame doesn't.... pretty damn expensive downunder. thoughts any one?
Still lots of work to do as far as maintenance and repairs go. I have looked at the swingarm bushing and bearings and they seem to be fine so a little cleaning and repacking and they will be good to go. I also decided to tear down my rear shock to clean it out and change the fluid. Local bike shop was kind enough to remove the spring and as it turns out a fellow inmate can recharge my Nitrogen so that made it easy enough. I was a little apprehensive about doing it because I had never done one...easy enough though. I had Sasquatch put a new gold valve and spring in it a few years back so this was just a service. Instructions I used for the shock service
PWRCRZR....I copied this guy's idea when I had my KLR apart. It has really helped keep my shock cleaner: Made a liner (so to speak out of an old inner tube. Fido
i just did that yesterday as well...great minds and all. it worked great on my up north KLR so KLR south got one to keep that moab clean
