No Calgary Ducati dealer anymore?

I have a 2011 Multistrada 1200 S Touring. It currently has 11300km and is ready for it's 12k service and there is a recall to replace the coolant. I bought the bike from Calgary Ducati which was owned by the Wild brothers who own Calgary Harley. At the bike show this year I noticed these "Shaganappi Motorsports" signs in the Ducati booth but not Calgary Ducati. i saw Tim Wild, the brother of the owner and asked him what was up and he told me Calgary Ducati sold to Shaganappi and now it was going to be called "Ducati of Calgary"... interesting.

So the week before last I emailed "Ducati of Calgary (http://www.ducatiofcalgary.com/) to make an appointment and got this back:

As of now we do not have a dealer agreement with Ducati. As a result we cannot get the parts to properly be able to perform your service and recall.

I would highly recommend calling xxxx from Ducati North America you can reach him at xxx-xxx-xxxx or email at xxxxxxxxxx@ducati.com . He can direct you to a location that you can get these service's taken care of.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

At bare minimum that seems like misrepresentation to me.

So I email Mr. X from Ducati and got no response.

So now I sit here with my MTS and unable to get it serviced with one more year on the warranty. there is another shop in town that are Ducati specialists (sport cycle) and by all accounts they are good but they are not a delaer either and can't do warranty work.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? It's a real PIA because it's a beautiful bike and has been perfect since I bought it last April, but you have to be able to get it serviced...

Try Brian, the previous Ducati dealer. Has a shop in NE Cowtown.

You won't find a better or more knowledgeable guy to work on your bike. If I still lived there and had a Duck I wouldn't take it to anyone else.

I went by and chatted with Brian for about an hour on Friday. Nice guy and definitely knows his stuff, but he's not a dealer and can't officially do the recall/warranty work.

I would be very interested in your thoughts on previous work he has done and any insight on his recommended service intervals...

That sucks. It is a good thing that your 'Duc has been reliable - if it was a lemon, you'd really be screwed.

It appears that there is a pi$$ing match going on between Shaganappi and Ducati and they are trying to suck you in. You'll probably have to wait it out - it's hard to believe that Ducati wouldn't want a dealer in Canada's richest city.

Is this a good reason for a spring ride to Kelowna?

Anyone looking for a Ducati in the Calgary area should be aware that they'll get no support from Ducati Canada.

We can always break out the hammers, er, wrenches. I've never worked on one of them desmo engines, how different could it be from my GM 350? Just tighten the rockers until the pushrods stop rattling, right?

He was a dealer. but got screwed by Ducati NA when they were doing their bike boutique, BMW style redux of dealerships. Biggest mistake Ducati ever made. His shop was top service shop for NA 3 years running.

I met Brian in '88 when he had Moto Italia out in Cochrane. I was riding a slightly modified 860 GT at the time and he would have an organized ride every weekend out to Radium and back. He was building a Seeley framed 900 at the time.

For regular services you really have no choice but to go there, unless you want to trek to Edmonton. For warranty/recall stuff you will be stuck going to Edmonton or the next nearest shop, which is in Kelowna.

Ducati is opening up a brand new shop this Friday in Richmond BC, and all the 'suits' from Ducati NA will be there. I guess they can only think about 1 shop at a time.
As for your situation, I'm guessing Bentley in Kelowna is your closest shop.

Um, you BC guys who seem to think Kelona is closer to Calgary than Edmonton - one question - are you Americans?
Not to make light of the OP's dilemma, which sucks. Argyll Motorsports in Edmonton are a big dealer and good folks, tho as a KTM guy, I'm not really a bike customer, just accessories and gear.

I said "Next nearest" shop is in Kelowna, after Edmonton. Reading comprehension isn't your forte is it?

Hmm, three hours on Hwy 2 to Edmonton or eight hours through the mountains to Kelowna - yep, Kelowna is closer by ride quality logic!

Maybe someone can go by and grill them since they aren't getting back to desmodab.

My apologies for overlooking the shop in Edmonton. I guess I've never placed alot of emphasis on a city that is best known for having a really big mall, and a 2 week summer with black flies that want to lay eggs in your nose.

Thanks for all the posts guys - appreciate the help. Mr. Canoehead is a mechanical wizard but still, I'd like to have a dealer close for the electronics and warranty stuff. I like working on my own bike but you still need a local dealer (at least with a new-ish Italian electrically loaded bike )

I heard back from Ducati about 10 mins ago. They say:

At this time, due to the sale of the original Ducati Calgary business to the Shaganappi Group, currently there is not an Authorized Ducati Dealer in Calgary at this time. While we are working on a solution to our Dealer open point in Calgary, our nearest Authorized Point is Edmonton.

If you have any specific questions pertaining to the recall, etc… please simply reach out to Customer Service. (email address in the above address bar) For contact information on the Edmonton store, please simply visit the Ducati Canada website for phone and email numbers.

We look forward to announcing a Dealer Placement in your area so that we can continue servicing “locally” the Ducati Customers of Calgary.

Well, that's helpful... NOT. Hopefully they somebody (other than F-ing Blackfoot) ASAP. In the mean time I guess I'm off for a night of Scotch drinking in Edmonton with my buddy Bruce (aka Grizzler).

That's brutal. I've got my Monster and while it's nearing the end of it's warranty, it would sure be nice to have an official dealer locally. Thankfully Brian and Sport Cycle are fantastic to deal with, but I understand your concern with a newer bike. Keep us posted, and best of luck to you.

I do think it's odd though because at the bike show I spoke with Mike from Ducati Calgary about a new bike and he said they were expecting them in the spring and to come on by. I'm guessing he didn't realize what was going on.

Funny...I've never heard Argyll talked about like that although from my experiance I'd have to agree. I purchased 2 bikes from them, but the third came from Kelowna for a reason. Almost impossible to book service last summer so they must have a large client base. HD has their pirates, BMW has their Starbucks Boys, but what do you call Ducati posers?

I went into Arggh-yl with a female coworker a few years back. She was in the market for a new bike and new exactly what she wanted. The salesman kept turning to talk to me and being very patronizing to her. I had to walk away and eventually he was unwilling to talk about getting the bike she wanted out of the pile so she could sit on it. The japanese bikes are stacked in so tight you can't see much more than the headlights on em. Eventually she took her cash sale to GW cycle in Calgary. They set up shipping with a friend of hers and they even threw $2000 worth of gear for her to try on.
There business mentality has lead me to talk 3 people out of buying Ducati's.

I had an ST3 that I just loved. After I had it brutalized by Argyll, I took it to Sport Cycle. The service went OK, but they put my wheels on with an impact gun which eventually caused an axle failure, and a ride home in my Pick Me Up Truck.

I loved that bike, but I couldn't find anyone to do the specific service that I couldn't do myself. I traded it for a Dakar, that I can wrench on. But I sure miss that bike.

I've vever stepped foot in Argyll but I take it they are Edmonton's version of Blackfoot, reputation wise. Back in my day it wasn't to complicated in Edmonton There were a couple of good family owned Icons like United cycle,Scona cycle,and Alberta cycle ,a couple of niche type enthusiast shops like Western motocross,and a cool Ossa shop in Beverly that I can't remember the name of. I bought my Tiger from Echo cycle and so far am pretty happy for the most part with them. who else in Edmonton and Calgary have good solid reputations? I've been out of the loop for 25 years.

I called Aargh-yll yesterday and finally made appointment. I first tried their online service booking page on their website. On Wednesday I entered all my information and submitted it, then later in the day I got an error message saying that it had "failed". I forwarded that message to "service@argyllmotorsports.com" and "sales@argyllmotorsports.com" on Thursday and got no response at all. After 3 days of trying "electronically" I finally called them. I spoke to a guy in service (who shall remain unnamed, for now) and he clearly could not have given a shit less. He seemed bothered and slightly annoyed that I was trying to get a Ducati serviced. I explained that the dealer was closed here and I would have to ride it up from Calgary and that my plan was to do this Friday after work so they could service the bike on Saturday for me. He outright and bluntly rejected that and commented "we don't have the Ducati tech in here all the time and especially not in weekends so that's not gonna happen".

So all in all I am concerned. I LOVE this bike but so far the Ducati service experience has completely sucked. I heard they are close to signing another dealer in Calgary, maybe that will help. I am moving to Victoria in a few months so I guess I'll have to start all over again out there. I know they just opened a big new dealer in Richmond outside Vancouver and there is a small dealer in Victoria itself so hopefully one of those works out for me, but hope the improve the Alberta situation for the rest.

I'll post how the Argyll service goes once it's done.
