There's probably an interesting story here, but I'll be damned if I know. I came across this abandoned GS on a ride last year In Mendocino National Forest. Not a soul around. Since I was riding solo and not very experienced, it intimidated me enough to turn around, even though it cost me three hours extra riding.





For those in the area, this is the M5 crossing of the NF Cache Creek near Hough Springs.

Well the bike has cut deep down below the riverbed and perhaps the electrics or airbox got the water-fill? - I don't get it, I wasn't there.



I would have worked it out somehow - But what do I know, it is only a $15k ride

So, no one stays behind to protect it - GREAT Insurance risk I guess, or, it was stolen and they had no desire to stick around?...:huh


Stolen, a 15k BMW bike, w/o side bags - as they were still in the motel with the owner???

OK, the story on the airbox - Our KLR650s suck from under the seat ...

What a mess - your thread was so unused that when I did a SEARCH function it didn't come up in response to my review of the results of the list generated by my "water" and "crossing" query using the SEARCH feature - I should have scrolled past the first five pages of replies to my search query as at some point your dormant thread, one that was quit active until early January 2006, would have certainly become evident.


I discussed this issue in the first posts on my thread, and no-one cared to the level that you do. You have made it clear that 'water crossing' is your turf and I once again offer to allow the thread I created to have its contents moved to your thread and my mistaken thread to be destroyed.

Maybe Baldy can help?

In any event - I am done with this and could use some admin help in nuking my thread

If he came all the way down M5 from Goat Mountain then my guess is he got himself stuck by going to slow in the crossing. He was then unable to muscle the bike out of the mud and rock. A come-along is a good tool to carry, but there's usually a Jeep with a winch in the area (within 30 miles!)

Most all of those roads are of the 2 to 3 daily passersby type. I believe your best bet is to wait with the bike. The first passerby can help you out of the situation-or get help if that is in the cards. Enloe Hospital in Chico sells Helicopter Evac insurance for about $40 a year if you ride this area.

Seems to be about 1 Med Evac each weekend in my casual observation...though if this rider walked away I suppose they were not injured...

Toward Clear Lake south of Bartlett Springs:


I've never been stuck in a creek before, but the Bear Creek crossing has threatened to swallow me on more than one occaision. Frozen water crossings out there seem to be my nemesis on a bad day...

...and three extra hours of riding is a bad thing because...?

The bike was facing the opposite direction, towards Goat Mtn. Just 100 feet up the hill behind the bike in the first photo is Bartlett Springs Rd. That was his best bet for help. This was late on a Sunday afternoon and the forest is getting pretty empty then.

Only because I was a relative noob to riding in the dirt, traveling solo, it was 5:00 in the afternoon and I had a bit of backtracking to do.

Didn't do this one this slad took a pick up truck a few years ago and one of the guys didn't make it.....the slab is very slick when it's wet



My son and I were out for a ride and came up on this one he snapped the pic but didn't feel like giving it a try......wise young boy.....I would have tried it
