Almost lost my melon on the way home from work on Friday. It started as a rough day in the rain and a visit from officer friendly. I still made it on time. On the way home my Amish neighbor forgot to take the fence down that was across the road to move his cows. No flags, just a single strand across a dirt road. Needless to say I didnt see it until it was on me. Fortunately it hit just under my fender and only scratched my right fork and side panel. Another foot and a half and my melon would have been lying on the road next to my bike! All is well and my wife and kids still have me!!
I'd sure be talking to your neighbor Mr. Schwarzendruber / Yoder / Schmucker / Hochstetler (that should cover a majority of them where I live anyway! ) :) ALL Amish I have dealt with have always been fair people. I am sure they'd have insurance - or offer some other kind of compensation if you talked to them. (Maybe you already did)... The best thing - you are ok! :) Jay
The main reason to talk to him in the first place is to make sure it won't happen again... I think that the farmer does not know or ponder the consequences of a piece of wire going through any part of your anatomy. Just my 2c AlpineRAM
I understand the Amish are known for making good pies. Free pie for life! That's a close one, I'd be mega-paranoid around there for awhile.
Tie a <s>red</s> bright green rag to the wire so it ends up in the middle of the road the next time he strings it across. (Red isn't very visible in the dark.)
And red might upset the cows? We don't have any Amish people round here - would they even understand the damage that a string of wire could do at anything more than a walking pace?
+1 for free pie. The few Amish that I've interacted with seem very similar to the Mormons I grew up next to - if you're their neighbor or at least in the local circle, you get benefits of free cookies, muffins, jams & jellies in canning season, and protection from missionaries, and I suppose a hand erecting a barn. They're very kind, and community oriented. If you were to approach them in a neighborly manner to say, "hey please be more careful about leaving obstacles in the road (i.e. invisible ones) that might damage my motorized horse", they would likely be welcoming of your concern. Since you dinged your bike, I'd push for some free pie or at the very least some secret family recipes. Those are like treasure
