So my 550 Zumo is or was 5 yrs old as of July 17. On my Utah ride last week it would not turn on one morning. I tried all of the reset tricks, new battery, etc. Called Garmin and thy told 5 years was above average life expectancy! Ouch, for the almost $ 800.00 I paid for it 5 years seems pretty new to me. I am used to gear lasting 15 to 20 years. In any case they offered to swap my unit for a rebuilt with a 90 day warranty for $ 150.00 so I took them up on it. I like the 550 just wish it had lasted longer.... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
5 years is pretty good for anything on a bike. I am on my second refurb. First was on extended warranty.I have also replaced the screen/digitizer myself but that was cheap. Just bought a Zumo 660 when the 550 crapped out on vacation tour. Time will tell.
Well I am still waiting on my 550 replacement rebuilt Garmin tells me they ran out of parts to make repairs and it should ship at the end of the month. Dam frustrating
Yeah, my recent refurb took 2 weeks to come into stock. Garmin's way of saying, buy a new $$$$$ 660 unit, which i did.
Well it has been a month since I sent my 550 in for repairs. All I keep getting from Garmin is that the parts to repair it are not available. I feel like we are in a game of hold out, me to get it repaired and them for me to give up and buy a 660. Pretty dissapointing customer service so far. On the other hand I have gone back to using maps and there is a lot to be said for a piece of paper, it doesn't need batteries or a power cord, I get them for free at AAA, no mounts are needed except for a tank bag or a pocket, if they break who cares it was free anyway. Keep it up Garmin and I may never go back to a GPS......
Yep. Well, the 550 is a discontinued device. I got mine refurbished recently and plan to sell it. I already got a new 660 to replace it. It is better to stay on the new product curve in these cases. Unfortunate though.
Garmin has offered 660's at the refurb replacement price to 550 owners in the past when they couldn't come up with replacement 550's. You might push them to do the same for you.
I tried tat they offered a 660 at full price as my 550 was 5 years old Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Keep trying, a lot just depends on who you end up talking to. All they can do is keep saying no. There are guys on here that did the same thing with broken 276c's which many are older then the 550's. Got Garmin to replace them with 478's.
So I got the big cheese on the phone today and after a little NY attitude I have a 665 Zumo on the way for the same cost as the refurbished 550! Way to go Garmin! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Well Garmin went above and beyond. The big brown truck showed up with a refurbished 665 complete with mount, XM antennae, case, two batteries and a refurbished 550! I definitely got the right person on the phone! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Yea I scored big time, Garmin made it all good and then some. Their customer service rivals Apple in this case! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
