Off the graphics, they are ugly anyway. A good looking woman does not require makeup. I love '01. It will do almost anything. Great bike.
Mustang Pegs: Excellent Taller Bars: Rox Risers Seat: Put in your miles and decide after that. I did 900-odd miles in a day on the Tiger and my biggest problem was seat-peg distance, not the seat. That was before the Mustang pegs. Centerstand: Yes, absolutely. Get the SW Motech. If you have the money, throw a quality aftermarket shock on the Tiger and do the forks. It's a whole new kitty.
$6500 is what I figure after I'm done with it. I'm getting it for $4275, I figure a bit over 2K more after I'm done. Depending on what I all do: skid plate, probably needs new tires, various guards, aux lights, luggage, cruise control, heated grips, I guess from what I read several windscreens, center stand, gps mounts. T
Please elaborate on the suspension work on the Tiger. I have a 06 955i and thought about sending the forks and shock to Race Tech. I'm I in the ballpark?
Acody, Don't make me talk to myself! It's been a year to the day since you got your tiger. I should be getting a new to me roulette green '01 this weekend, if plans work out. Can you give me a one year review of your bike? Things you liked/disliked, and mods that were worth it, and ones that weren't so much. I'm getting mine with less miles, but way less stuff with it too. I'm getting crash bars, and SW-Motech racks, but no luggage. T
a good shop should be able to give you exactly what you want . bear in mind that the suspension is going to cost damn near the book value of a 7-12 year old tiger's worth .
Ok. To begin with, i haven't done any fork work other than heavier oil to take out some of the DIVE DIVE DIVE feeling i got every time i got on the brakes. Shock: after owning the bike for a good 6 years, my stock shock was going all pogo stick on me. Softer and softer and just completely unsatisfactory, especially 2-up. Keep in mind that i've had preload on 5 for a loooong long time because i found it mushy on any other setting. So i thought it was time to bite the bullet and spend on a quality after-market shock. As luck would have it, a forum member on Tigertriple.com was selling a very high-end Wilbers which after much looking at my bank account, i bought. We're talking remote pre-load, high-low speed compression, the works. The transformation of the back end of the bike and how the rear tire hooks up is unbelievable. Definitely not soft, but plush. Unflappable. I'd never scraped a peg on the big girl before but i've done it a couple of times since. Loaded, two-up...no problem. Much, much sharper ride, incredibly better ride quality...i could gush about it all day long. I cringed when i paid up but one ride and i'd completely forgotten about it. Call Race Tech or Traxxion Dynamics and see what they can do for you. I can tell you you won't be sorry.
Here is a thought I had. I am working on trying to buy an 03 with wire wheels. Yes I know its heavy, but still lighter than my 06. Sending the wheels off to Woody's for a 21" front and maybe a 18" rear or just true and superlace the stock rear. Then sending the forks to Race Tech and buying their shock. I think this could make a pretty nice trail bike with tons of power. Living in Alaska sucks trying to buy stuff from down there.
I would not try to turn a tiger into a trail bike for one reason. Just too heavy. It is however a great forest service road bike. I thought about the 21" front for a long time. Decided it would not be a huge improvement for the big cost.
I got it yesterday. Looking at the tires, it only has 7309 miles, and the tires are original, I'm thinking even though the tread looks good, they are probably beyond their useful service life as far as age is concerned. I'd like to get shinko 705's, I just don't know if I should get the front bias ply or radial. It looks like the radial is only available for the rear, but the front has two options. Does the Tiger need a radial, or handle better with one? The bias is about $30-$40 less. Any suggestions? Thanks
I would go with the radials. I had them on my Tiger and they were really good especially for the money. I'm now running TKC 80s, but will probably switch to a more 70/30 tire if I get the 03 Girlie I'm after right now. That will get a 21" front and straight knobbies. Good luck, these are wonderful under rated motorcycles.
How about engine oil? Which brand you use? Last season I used a Motul 5100 10w-40, now in spring I will change the oil again. I am just thinking what would be the best to use. Use the same Motul 5100 10w-40 or.....Suggestions or your experience? About suspension, all you must do is to change fork oil to different viscosity. I just did the oil change to my fork and I used a BOmotoroil 5w oil.
I am working on getting an 03 right now. The only holdup might be with the bank. Once that is good, working out the logistics to get it to Alaska from NW Conus. Anyon interested in a hotrodded 01 XR650L? The wife may not be happy with a 5th bike in the garage. Not nessecarily the 5th bike, but the you can no longer park your car in the garage since one of those bikes is hers. Will post up when I get it. Going with soft bags on this one. The weight of TT Zegas is pretty noticeable.
