I don't know the reasoning behind the mineral hydraulic oil, but it is not rated for the type of stresses found inside the motor at all. Adding water to your oil would probably have a similar effect, as the stuff is very light. I was first warned by Frank Pons, ex GP and World MX mechanic/tuner, that the stuff needed to be removed ASAP for the health of the big ends. I figured who am I to argue? I just did it.

Increase the tire pressure, increase the preload in the rear.

    Are you running bags?

Lots of rear preload right now. I'm 225lbs and still running stock springs.
It got better when I moved further back on the seat. Tire pressure could have done it. It may have been low.

Wolfman enduro's with maybe 5-8lbs of load. Pair of shoes, handfull of tools, and a change of clothes is all.

It's nice to carry an 12V plug in electric air pump. I tore the plastic off a Walmart model to make mine smaller. It plugs in the electric vest pigtail and wraps in a rag. I either pump up or slow down when I get to pavement.

Use a coolant made for aluminum.

You likely have a water pump seal leak. Look in the LC4 640 sticky http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86958 and scroll down to just above the somewhat scary looking portrait and check out LC4 Pilot's wisdom.

New tires? These bikes are famous for the weaves for the first few hundred miles on a new set of rubber. I've had the experience when I put on a 908RR rear with an older front and new Scorpion Pro on the front with an older rear. The symptoms went away after about 300 miles on the tires.

    Hi guys
Got a question about low octane fuel in early 640 A's.

I know that in later gen 640 Adventures that if you have to use crap fuel then all you do is disconnect the brown wire next to the CDI unit (this is as per the later model owners manual page 19 "Activating the ignition curve for low octane fuel").

Mine is a 2002 and the owners manual just says dont use less than 95 or you will damage the engine.

The question is, is there and equivalent wire that I can cut and put a switch on with my 02? Where is it, what colour is it etc.

FYI: My CDI unit is numbered CB 7459 1G18 and doesnt look even remotely like my friends 07.

    Cheers

I need this for central Oz riding - can only get Opal fuel (low octane) out there. Some 1 horse towns in WA only sell low octane as well.

My manual states "Do not use lower than premium 95 octane fuel otherwise engine damage will result"

I dont want to take the risk of not having the option so I need to know and make the mod to use whatever I can get.

Do you know if and how I can do this?
