I too am interested in the magneto setup on this bike. I know that the stock alternator can't be run batteryless since it needs 12v to excite the field. I know that people have converted them to a permanent magnet alternator and run batteryless using a capacitor in place of the battery. Short of expensive, full-race units, I've never seen a magneto ignition on an XS650. Please share.
It's a magneto off of a 1998 yamaha banshee, and it's inside the engine, (I assume where the alt was) I didn't install it, and I will take pics the first time I crack the case. already broke the countershaft sprocket cover when the (totally knackered) chain master link broke. parts on the way.... and so it goes. bike has no power down low at all, but fucking rips on the highway! The keihin carb isn't dialed in yet. jaz

Very interesting mods on that thing! Especially the mag and the two into one aluminum intake manifold!
first off, I wanna make this clear. I DID NOT BUILD THIS BIKE. Sorry for yelling, but schmucks taking credit for someone else's build is one of my pet peeves. a very good freind of mine did this entire build, Everything from this point on will be mine. ok, a couple of photos. That's the magneto I believe, artsy shot I know, here's another not so pretty I'm leaning over my KLR, who knew it made a decent tripod also? I know very little about Xs's, my last one was fifteen years ago I got rid of it, and I didn't wrench on my own shit then (stupid me) so I didn't know much about it. Question about the clutch. the clutch cable goes to the left side, and hooks to a lever & spring on the part of the bike that's removed. there's a bar that goes into the bike that aligns up inside the case with the clutch lever/spring. Is that supposed to move freely? How does it engage/disengage the clutch? IN the second photo, you can just see it to the left of the countershaft sprocket center jaz
That's the clutch pushrod, it goes through the bottom end and pushes directly on the clutch. If it is stock, there are actually two rods end to end. Aftermarket rods can be bought in one piece. Yes it does move freely. Whatever you do, don't lose the little ball bearing that goes between the end of the rod and the spring loaded mechanism. When you pull on the cable the mechanism rotates and shifts slightly toward the engine which pushes the push rod and releases the clutch. The seal for this rod is notorious for leaking, and it is a pita to stop. But the parts are available cheap from "Mikes XS". And hell yes a 75XS counts. They are the "better Bonneville" you know!

Now I need a couple more to damp my embarrassment! Sorry, Jim PS. Jazzman, I'll PM you as soon as I get my seal kit installed. If you haven't gotten it welded up before then, I'll still do it freeby.
Thank you jazzmans, that is one hell of a great link, looks an interesting operation but up for the challenge, I'll let you know how I get on sourcing parts over here in Australia, really would solve a lot of problems for me, too much night riding & for that you need good lights but the old charging can bring you undone in a big way! I've nearly soughted out most problems, this would be a great addition to my bikes though, [burn roos @ 100m if I had my way!], especially when you do dumb things like riding into Wannaaring for three hours [from the east], night riding in the those parts of the country is aways full of nice furry creatures :dllama Good roads too! Now a question, How the hell do you guys kick start these things with one kick? It's a total bitch for me, hard as hell to start. My buddies who all run kick start bikes, can kick this bike and start it in one or two kicks, so any pointers.... Ive seen this bike posted before on ADV...maybe not by you, but pictured in your backyard. The guy was gripeing about how sluggish it was off the line and at idle. Several inmates and i agreed that the two into one intake (cool as it may be) is probably hurting your performance rather than improving it. I think if you reference my "Just another xs650 build" thread you will see that. There are several guys makeing smaller ones that will probably allow the air and fuel to reach the combustion chamber quicker and improve the throttle response. Hardtails are fun!
