The v4 Beta's of BaseCamp are available and it appears that the BaseCamp teams are listening:

    Mac-BaseCamp 4.0 is here.
    The Win-BaseCamp 4.0 is here.
Garmin believes these beta to be reasonably stable, but it is a Beta, so there are definitely some quirks to be expected.

A few words about your data
When you install 4.0.0.4, all your data from 3.3 (or earlier) will be copied. You can keep using 3.3 afterwards, 4.0 will not alter your 3.3 data (but 3.3 also cannot see any changes you make with 4.0).

    Change list

This is the list of changes. There is a separate thread WhatÂ’s new in BaseCamp 4.0 that gives some more explanations (please excuse the Windows screenshots until I get a chance to create a Mac version. The features are basically identical between the two platforms), and a Garmin Adventures thread that introduces that new feature (again please excuse the Windows screenshots).

    Added support for Garmin Adventures.
Added support to search for adventures.
Added support for transferring adventures to devices.
Added support for authoring and publishing adventures.
    Added chase camera adventure playback.
    Other New Features
Added intersection search. If you add an '&' between two roads, it will find the intersection, e.g. 'Main & Elm'
Added support for BaseStation mode for Rinos and Astros. Firmware support coming soon.
Added better trip planning capabilities to a route (you can set arrival/departure/layover times for via-points ).
Added a context menu for the hand and selection tools.
Added a read-only 'Unlisted Data' list that contains all items that are in no other lists.
Added support for waypoint creation date, which will not be changed when updating the waypoint.
Added information in waypoint properties which routes that waypoint is a part of.
Added ability to create a route from a named trail.
Added support for temperature and pressure in track statistics and graphs.
Added support to delete waypoints that are included in a route.
Added ability to perform undos and redos on supported devices.
Added ability to create waypoint from find result on the map.
Added a photo viewer for Geotagged Photos.
    Improvements
Improved display when many photos are at the same spot on the map.
Improved XML processing (so it should now be possible to import and export larger gpx files than previously).
    Fixes
Fixed numerous issues with finding addresses.
    Fixed area calculation for tracks.
Fixed issue where the Geocache symbol was not consistent with found status when importing or adding a geocache.

    Let the 'Adventures' begin!

Will these be 'packaged' in such a way that you can share them, between compatible units, like at offroad events, etc?

Yes, that's the idea. There will be a Garmin Adventures Website where you can "share" your Adventures. In addition, each Adventure can be Exported as a GPX file. Keep in mind that any Garmin "Adventure-specific" data will not be usable by other GPS devices that are not Adventure-aware.

Adventures are a GDB database and therefore BaseCamp will, at v4, support multiple databases - as long as they are Adventures.

Looking forward to playing around with this but will have to use the Windows :cry version until they release a new beta of the Mac version (currently, the beta will not run on my Mac).

UPDATE: Mac version is now running on my MBAir. Seems there is an issue with the "Unlisted Data" feature so I had to use another one if my databases.

So what's the verdict on BC 4.x? stable? worth it ?

I am embarquing in a project to transfer all my tracks from mapsource to Basecamp, if V4 is worth it and the "adventure" feature works , then I may just do 4 instead of 3.3.x

    thank you
    christian

It is BC V4.01 now and I have been using it for awhile and have not had any issues.

v4.0.1 is stable and only has a few annoying issues that will most likely get addressed in the next maintenance release.

DO NOT INSTALL v4.0.2 for Windows AT THIS TIME. It has an install issue.

Both the Mac and Windows v4.0.2 are safe to install now.

Hmmm. Are any of the Garmin units capturing this info currently? Perhaps I'm out of date....

Why is Garmin always picking on me :deal

Loaded win from your list, when it starts it says lost data file, fix? yes
then it installs a newer version then your link. 4.0.2.0
worked nice, made a route (in direct route) and saved it.
Restrated program, same Lost data file, fix? yes
then it installs a newer version again 4.0.2.0
    my new route is gone.
and every time I restart the program, same thing all over again.

Never in the history of mankind has any leading company fought so hard against intuitive programming. I feel your pain.

Quite simply, the people (person?) who writes the software doesn't actually use it... As a software developer myself, this isn't something new to me. I've come across many developers in my career that simply don't understand what "user experience" means.

Yes I had this unpleasant experience too in Win7-64b the first time. I backed up all my tracks, routes and waypoints using the BC backup, then uninstalled everything, rebooted, cleared all the temp files, then reinstalled and opened the backup file I stored and all was good. No issues since then - even going from V4.01 to V4.02.

If that does not work you may have to save your waypoint, track and route files as *.gdb or *.gpx and export - then import back to your fresh install of BC.

Hope you get it up and running smoothly.

Why don't you take your theory to the developers on the Garmin Forums?

I generally don't hang out at the Garmin Forums, but I will start to monitor it a little more closely and see if I can't put a useful comment in here or there. For the most part, I really don't have issue with BaseCamp, but there are some things that need work, IMO. The search, for example, is horrendous.
