What is the single best modification you have made to your bike?

#1). I added some photo-reflective decals to the topcase and sidecases of my FJR.

Hit by headlights, those decals really do light up remarkably well, and it makes me feel somewhat safer riding at night. I'll take any little advantage I can find.

#2.) taller windshield. On longer trips, the near-silence is priceless.

Hard to pick one, there are so many now. But the likley order for the main mods:
1: Lower and set back MX wide pegs with extended shifter (I'm tall)
2: Updated suspension - Ricor front and rear w/heavy rear spring (I'm big and carry lotsa gear when camp/touring)
3: Raised handlebars (see 1)
4: Modified fairing w/adjustable wind screen (up for quiet highway, down for back road agressive rides)
5: Mikuni VM38 carb (simplicity, access, throttle response, low rpm smooth)

Others: Big rear rack, license plate relocate, HT side racks/soft panniers, skid plate (mandatory), heated grips, accessory power for GPS/cell phone charge, single LED voltmeter.

Always a work in progress.

yz forks on my bmw dakar is probably the best single mod. especially because the stock ones have been known to break at the axle.

GSA: Windshield extension from TT to kill the buffeting, Lowered seat so I can reach the ground and not fall over so much, Better shocks to be added because the stockers leak at 30K miles.

For highway trips, I'd have to go with highway pegs located so when I straighten my legs it gets my butt off of the seat and I sit on my thighs for a few miles. Then I can sit back down and go another hour.

Honda VT1300 Interstate

By far the Mustang seat. The original seat was terrible. Changed being about to ride the bike in comfort from about 30 minutes to hours.

On a KLR? 320mm front brake rotor. Stopping is good!

On other bikes? Aftermarket seat or Spencer work over on stock seat.

I have made only three mods to my XT250, and they all add to the same advantage, getting me to new places.

1) I replaced the sh*t seat with a Seat Concepts. Before I got a sore butt within a half hour, now I can cruise for half a day without even thinking about taking a break. I don't understand Yamaha's reasoning here, the two seats are basically the same materials and construction, just having slightly different shapes. Yamaha could have done this for no cost.

2) A rear rack and top box. I can carry supplies to enable me to travel further.

3) A cheap GPS. Now I can go with confidence to new places, that I wouldn't have attempted before.

Rick Mayer customized saddle on my GS. The stock GS seat sucked! Now, it's all-day comfortable.

Heated grips...with the real Hippo Hands for 6 months a year.

DR650 forks and internals swapped into my DL650 lowers combined with custom Ricor Intimidators. The custom rear shock was needed to keep the height equal but it didn't have near the band for buck the front mods had. I have done all sorta suspension mods on all kinds of bikes but this jerry-rigged mess works great.

Second best mod on that DL was the Audiovox Cruise Control.

Over all though, single best mod you can do on any bike is electric grips. Heated gloves are better but heated grips are always on the bike.

The option of "storage" quite priceless to me.

The best fix: Resetting the mixture screws that some *^#@^*$ of a prior owner went and goofed with. She used to need full choke, and her starter would whine and click two or three times before the bike caught and fired up. Now she needs the choke on the first notch, and a wish on the starter. I don't hear a whine, a click, or any other sounds except the engine instantly purring.

The best mod: Barnett clutch kit. My V-Star has a friction zone!

The next mod: I need a trunk, so I'm bolting a yellow 1550 case to the spot my pillion used to occupy.

I'm not a great rider, so I don't get that"wow" factor from a tuned suspension and so on...


The best mod on all the bikes I have owned is hard luggage of some sort- it turns a toy into a practical toy.

Compressed air horn, xenon hid and tail-light blinker.

I also like my LED lights hooked to the high-beam.

Sargent for the DL1000 & Seat Concepts for the XR650L. Lots of other worthwhile mods to both bikes but if neither could be ridden comfortably for more than 45 minutes why bother with changing anything else?

i changed my mind, the best single mod to my bike was going from a 17 inch rear rim to a 14 inch rear rim with a 180 tire.

for me two really stand out. a REAL cruise control unit. and an aux fuel tank

GPS hands down, helps me get unlost when it's time to head home...
