KTM 950/990 Adventure owners show off your bike

Tough to be french driving in the US We've all been there....

Yeah, there was a pilot car holding traffic back to less than 10mph all the way up Guanella pass...you should have seen the stack of traffic in front of us.

Some days ago, i've removed the SAS and EPC from my 950 ADV









The work is simple, except removing the front cylinder cover, that was a real pain in the ass



New covers

Some rubber covers with some glue and work is done



And she was ready to go!



Result, a more powerfull 2nd and 3rd gear

I was looking for a solution to carrying all the tire/bike tools, first aid/survival stuff, etc that it's smart to have along when you ride alone, which I do as often as not, and get all that weight down off the top of the bike. I didn't want to go with full cases since I will just fill 'em up.... Plus, I wanted the bike as narrow as I could keep it and still have all my stuff.

*edit* The racks are the KTM "suitcase carriers'. Got em off ebay cheap...

These are Rotopax storage boxes. They are basically the rotopax 2 gallon fuel tanks with a door added on; the latches are kinda minimal but the attachment system prevents them from opening even with the latches open. They are 3" deep on the outside, something less on the inside and the space is a funny shape; I'll post some images when I take some. They are claimed on some sites to be waterproof, but this is not my experience; no biggie, ziplocks are cheap and the boxes don't leakk a LOT, just....some. Haven't had 'em underwater yet, though.

Anyway, here's some pix...

I prototyped up a mounting plate using a PE cutting board with the plan being to get it made in heavy aluminum once I was happy. My fab guy told me I was nuts and that the PE was plenty strong and less likely to crack than the aluminum; he thinks the PE will hold up better in a crash as well. So far, so good....




Here's a shot of the whole arrangement; I like that I can carry just the black boxes or those plus a couple of gallons of gas...



Plenty of passenger room.



...and I can use a smaller top case since all the daily stuff is in the black boxes..



The side cases lock to the bike, same key, so there's no security issue parked at work during the day, or at least no more than usual.

Downsides? Yeah, on the one or two trips a year I take when I need camping gear, etc, where does it go? I'm thinking I'll try to find a Giant Loop bag or similar to throw right over the top of the whole works. Since the vast majority of what I do is day (or less) trips, and the terrain around here can be pretty rugged, this is a good solution for me. It's been mounted up for just about a thousand miles now, half of which has been dirt, and I'm happy so far.

Just to finish off the highjack...

I tape the lock on the mount; it's a barrel-lock and won't work full of dirt. If I know I'm getting dirty I just pull the lock completely per the Rotopax recommendation--the lock does not affect mount security other than for theft. Tape's for when I don't wanna stop or forget...



Since the photo in the last post, I added some weatherstripping to keep the bolt heads offa the cases.



Right side has tools, first aid, etc...if I run out of room I'll finally get around to moving the KTM kit back under the seat.



Left side has both tubes (hey, I got the space...), 10" tire irons (yay!), MTB hand pump, electric pump, costco towels, axle socket and 3/8 drive ratchet, tow strap and prolly a few other things...



These are a funky shape but can actually hold quite a bit. Easy on/off, narrow, I really like 'em. If I put a little effort into organizing/repackaging my crap I could increase the available space by probably 50%.

I'm thinking about trying some really thin weatherstripping on the door to keep what little water leaks into them out, also.

This is what I have of the bike so far that the previous owner shipped to me. Decided to set it up on the shop floor and make vroom noises... The bike will be here next Weds, can't wait! I'm upgrading from a '99 F650 and have had my eye on the Black KTM's for many years.

Yes, true...

It´s my long-distance windsreen, good for the 1100km-per-day trips to elba. But I´ve got a flipped low rallye-screen as well.

Showed it to a couple of "Bike enthusiasts"

Finally took the Leadville to Basalt, CO road over Hagerman Pass.

Did that pass last year. The power lines really take away from the view.

Not mine, but very cool use of the LC8.
