    1. CLEARLY explain to a friend that he's to ride parallel and about 20 yards from videographer.

    2. Tell the friend that he should NOT be taking the video as the passenger on your bike will handle it.

    3. Ride extremely fast!

I think the only logical question I could ask right now is: How did you react?

At the time, I didn't. My focus was on the terrain ahead of me, my passenger (my wife) was in charge of video. In short, I executed my job as discussed. After we stopped and I let the whole 'incident' sink in, I was pretty pissed at the potential catastrophe and how close we all came to dying. Keep in mind we were in the MIDDLE of the Alvord Desert in south eastern Oregon, the most remote part of the country. IF we would of collided it's quite possible we would of died out there on the playa as no one would of been available to help us.

This was day 2 of a 9 day dual-sport adventure. A few hours later, my wife broke her ankle after hitting a little sand while going 5 miles per hour.

Anyone wanna take a trip with us!?!?!? :evil

You did not come close to dying.

    He should've, though.

Anytime you crash a motorcycle you have a good chance of dying. Especially when your speed is in excess of 70 mph.

It didn't totally sink in just how bad that was until I saw the still frames showing the guy with one freakin' hand on the bars while the other was holding a camera in said situation (which was bad enough).

Please tell me that at least semi-heated words were exchanged at the conclusion of this stunt?

What I like in particular is that the guy's attention NEVER shifts in those frames. After almost running into the OP AND his wife, his focus is STILL on the camera's screen.

    I mean... DAMN.

Funny, the still shots alone don't look all that dangerous, until watching the video and seeing that the two shots were 0.01 seconds apart!

    So where's his video?

Maybe you should engrave this with an old rusted nail onto his camera...he deserves it after all.

Why would you try to hold a camera in your hand, anyway? That seems inherently unsafe, even for a passenger. There are a bazillion ways to mount a hands free camera, even on a helmet.

Of course, helmet cams will get you arrested in Maryland.

Was this a stranger or a friend? I wouldn't bring the first on a multi-day ride, and I wouldn't make a thread on advrider excoriating the second.

Friend. And he's a jack-ass. It was a close call, a mistake that won't be made again. Fun times.
