The road from Quinghai to Lhasa. We are up close to 5000 metres around here.
Taken from the train which was really interesting. But a bike trip through this area would be stunning

I may have been in a car, but this is definitely on my list to ride. This is I 60 in New Mexico, near the Very Large Array (VLA) radiotelescope.

Wow, you rode the world's highest passenger train. I'm envious.

Is it true that the cars are pressurized?

Did you get chance to travel south form Lhasa?

I was on my way to West Fest 07.... being in a car would not have been too bad... for me, the long straight stretches are kinda boring on a bike or a car either way...

    Austin,
Yup - That's the one! I think I saw all of three other vehicles while on the San Agustin Basin. I thought the roads leading up to it were kinda nice and curvy. But that is one long, straight piece of asphalt

Yes the cars have oxygen pumped into them.
Most of the height gain is overnight so you wake up to the hissing of the vents first thing in the morning and they stay on pretty much all the way into Lhasa in the evening.
Unfortunately did not have time to go south toward the Himalayas.
I have a vague plan to go back and cycle (probably push bike) between Lhasa and Katmandhu on the 'friendship highway'

i see all these straight highways and wonder what they would be like at full speed. do u have to worry about speed enforcement? are all the other vehicles you see engaged in a top speed run?

is it just a desolate free for all?

Here's a pic of the same road but I zoomed the camera in 10x. It went on like this for 40 or 50 klm's before I found a slight bend in the road then it looked the same again:eek1
Keep the speed up and you don't notice the corrugations. I saw many roads like this on my Top End Tour recently. Read about in Ride Reports if interested...

I have so many of these empty road pics. Most people think they are boring pics, but I keep clicking away. These long lonely roads are always calling my name.

I was here! Dec. 2005. (In my PU, with the XRL in the back)

I know what you mean, I love the desolate roads. It is nice to know they WERE actually call my name, and not just those voice in my head! :eyes
I would love to do that trip again, this time wait for the ice bridge to freeze.
