Pics? I've never had mine apart but it might be similar to other switch someone has used. Tick Tock....
How did you paint it? Just rattle can? I'm looking to do my 650gs to get rid of the ugly metallic blue color.
Any particular reason for going with two shades of black ? Any pro tips on how to remove old (5 years) rattle can paint from plastic panels I've thought about paint remover, but I'm afraid that'll eat the plastic. I've also considered light sandblasting. Sandpaper is out of the question
I was going to wait to post any pics untill I was done with it, but looking through the pics I've already taken, I'm thinking it actually is possible to open it up So this is the first thing I see.... fuck me, not looking good at all Pull it apart (and break one of the tabs in the process....of course...) What's the last pin for ? Our bikes only use 4 out of 5 pins in the ignition Got it cleaned up alright And stuffed as much grease as I could in there And looking through the pics I noticed what looks like a second release tab. Thinking maybe I can pull the switch itself out from the other end....will check that out later and report back.
hi, i shot the panelswith black basecoat then cleared with a flat clear then put the parts back on the bike, it looked good but looked like a quicky rattlecan job so i taped the front section and shot it with black basecoat and regular clear to break up the paint job and give it a little more detailed look. then some decals and i think im ok with it now.for old spray can paint i think some 320 wetand dry sandpaper would be the best then go over it with a few coats of primer, then sand the primer with some 600 grit wet and dry paper and it will be ready for paint. paint stripper will make a big mess and sandblasting might dig into the plastic too much i think. 320 wet sanding will cut through the old paint pretty quick.
rattle can will work, it looks about the same as the flat clear i used if you spray flat black rattle can. and since the gas is in the back you really dont need urethane automotive flat paint. i use the automotive urethane stuff at work so i have lots of left over paints to use and when i paint motorcycles with regular gas tanks i use it in case gas gets spilled over the tank and it wont hurt the paint. since the dakar has the gas in the rear if the rattle can paint gets messed up from gas spilled too much its easy to just pop off the side panel and re shoot it.
It's really messy. Cracked and flaked in places while it's "perfect" in other places. Would need to use filler to make it look decent, but the plastic flexes too much for that I think (front fender). Might as well buy a new fender maybe (and not paint it this time.....
I did like the "police" one...... could've painted Polite or something in the same font as the coppers use
Hello everyone. Just had my 30k mile service completed (at 29k). Exhaust valves were in spec (.011"), intake a little tight at .003" and adjusted to spec. Also, the head pipe was removed (i think for installation of new shock). When riding home i quickly noticed a much noisier bike, beginning around 4000 rpm, and seemingly more rattle/vibration at mid to higher rpms (4500 and up). Noise coming from head, not exhaust/tail area. I plan to notify the shop who did the work but thought i'd ask your collective opinion before doing so. Whatcha think: head pipe not reinstalled correctly? It seems tight at the head. thanks eanth
I'm a lurker no more. Bought me a Dakar! An 05 that's already fully farkled. Ohlins, KYB fork, all the guards, Wunderlich seat, screen, new TKCs and so forth. I'm diggin it. TAT 2012, here I come.
Never had mine apart but if they had to pull the exhaust off perhaps they didn't put a seal back in? It could feel tight but not sealing correct. Just a thought.
maybe before you buy a new one do try the paint stripper since you might buy a new one anyway, i noticed when i used stripper on most plastic it didnt damage it just bubbled the paint off but not sure how your fender would take the stripper.maybe try it and post pics!
I've had min on and off several times, both re-using the old gasket aswell as putting a new one in and never had any problems with sealing afterwards. If they didn't put the gasket back in however..... Quick job to find out though, two screws..... (may wanna loosen the rear cans from the exhaust pipe by the left passenger peg ot get it off at the front)
