Tink That guy in the reflection looks JUST LIKE YOU. Now, get that thing put together so you can ride it to the next vintage bike day.
Dropped the IKON springs in tonight. Funny, the springs I took out (OEM?, unknown) were progressively wound on BOTH ends!? The IKON are progressively wound on just one end, TINK
I've dedicated this project to my friend Mike Traynor. Mike was a long time BMW MOA member, founder of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, Ride for Kids, and a hell of great motorcycle rider. TINK
Now that's a thing of beauty. After cleaning off 33 year old grease the triple tree bearings see daylight for the first time since September 1978 when my bike was assembled in Germany. TINK
At some point I'll run out of things to take off and I'll have to start putting her back together. TINK TINK
Hey Tink - great thread !!! Really enjoyed your pics & progress so far. You one step ahead of me with my RT 1979. I been doing some reading on upgrading the brakes. The old ATE's were super seeded by Brembo's in 1980 - I think ? However, a great first step brake upgrade is the replacement of the "undertank" master cylinder with a bar mounted master cyclinder. In so doing you get rid of the cable from the brake to the master under the tank & get a much better brake response with the existing ATE's - make sense ? The bar mounted master connects to a under tank splitter and directly to the front calipers.

Can't believe my luck. I've been looking and waiting for a set of R90S or R100S "long stem" mirrors for my project and what do you know, a set shows up on the LA Craigslist. These are original OEM BMW R100R mirrors in almost new condition. SCORE! TINK
Now that I have the paint done I'm thinking about pinstripes. I've decided to do gold pinstripes. It just so happens I know a guy that has an original unmolested 1974 R90S which he bought new (original owner) back in the day. So I ask my friend if I can take some pictures and measurements of the pinstripe on his bike. He says yes, but tells me that his bike is an early production bike and at that time BMW was putting "tape" pinstripes on instead of painted pinstripes. "TAPE", on a BMW, never hard of such a thing. Strange. You can see where the tape overlaps in the photo below.
Yep .. thats right ... 1974 had tape... then went back to hand painted ... and what I can find on the web the last model to get hand painted pin strips was the last K75 Ultima's ... some one please correct me if I am wrong ... I am in the process of working out pin stripping myself.
Really nice work Tink ... It always brings a tear to my eye when I see a RT being stripped down to become yet another café racer ... but you are doing it justice. Oh by the way ... what " black " did you settle on ???
Looks like an Avus black. Are you planning on using the oem rivets to hold the screen on? Consider these...#1. They work a treat...push fit into the brass spacer, easy in, easy out, durable and cheap. Look good too.
Thats what I am thinking ... trying to work out the colour of this 91 RS ... colour code on the bike is 635 ( Pearl White ) but it was re sprayed by the factory ( either in Germany or Oz ) to Black. You would probably be the man to know this Boxerboy. PS .. Yep I tried similar method on the LT for the screen ... works a treat on the screen
I've got the plastic screws/nut that came with the hardware kit I got from Bob's BMW, but I'm thinking of going with #1, looks cleaner, almost like the BMW rivets, minuse the installation hassle. BTW, I got a spare windshield from the same guy I got the R100S mirrors. It's in "fair to good" condition. I'm thinking of painting the inside black to get that Darth Vader look. TINK
I still have all the RT parts and may some day resurrect the RT... love this ad, love the Red Smoke paint job!
