Got mine today, I'll be checking it out next week. I'm still a few months away from having a running bike, but I'll be sure to give an update. Thanks Mark.
Hey Mark, By looking at all the photo's , it's easy to tell you do really precise work. Nice Job ! I was wondering about the inner oil line running so close to the header pipe. Is there any concern about the heat and that rubber oil line , or is there plenty of clearance in between ? It's a little hard to tell by the pictures. Thank's , and again - Awesome Job.
The guard looks like it did the job. Just like protective gear, better the protective stuff gets destroyed than the goodies. No worries. Send me an email at mark@mega.net or PM me. I will get you the latest guard for your beast. I need to update the home page and list an upgrade kit to replace the old design should anybody want one. Cheers Maek
There is plenty of room between the oil hose and the exhaust. 3/4" to be precise. Thanks for the kind words about my work. Even though I get some parts cut at a water-jet machine shop (rough cut), I spend over an hour on each kit, finishing, bending and checking each part. I just received another batch of parts from the machine shop and spent many hours getting 10 sets ready for put the finishing touches on them. About another 2 hours to get them finished for the kits. I really could just throw the parts in an industrial tumbler and let it do the work, but the finish isn't up to my standards. I am way too anal. Not to worry about the header pipe and the oil line. I really wouldn't sell something with that problem.... after all, it is on my own bike too. Cheers, Mark
I rode my XRL approx 6000 miles last year with GSMark's cooler. Never a problem. I might not ride mine like most. Mostly back roads and a little gravel. No extended interstate riding. Oil is definitely not as dark at 1500 mile oil change.
Received my oil cooler for the XR600R , trick piece of work !! Can anyone give me a ballpark on how much oil should be added to the system vs. standard ? Gives me an idea on how many liters of oil I should go out and buy prior to installing Thanks ! Btw, Mark I love the instructions, very clear !
Thanks for the kind words about my oil cooler kit. I finally checked the oil capacity of the kit. It was quite a bit less than I thought it would be. Figure about 170cc of additional oil. The oil cooler holds 130cc and the lines hold 40cc. Hope this helps. Cheers, Mark
I've added an upgrade kit for the people that purchased the original oil coolers. This new guard is rubber mounted and still attaches to the frame. This kit includes low profile oil cooler bolts, aluminum counter-sunk washers, new motor mount bolt /washer, and new guard. This will fit the XR650L and the XR600. $45.00 Including shipping. Cheers Mark
These are very sweet! Very interested in what Honda should have had on them from the factory. Beautiful work!!!!
I hope this helps in answering your questions about the kit: You have my apologies for the late reply. Thanks for looking at my oil cooler kits and your kind words about them. Q 1. Where do the two lines tap into on the 650l? A 1. The line that is located behind the frame down tube, the one right in front of the engine, is cut and the new oil lines are clamped to the ends. Q 2. Are the above existing locations? A 2. See answer 1. This is very easy to do. I provide very detailed and illustrated instructions. The instructions are easy to follow. I have always hated getting a product with crap instructions. I took the time to illustrate each step so I wouldn't have to answer questions about the installation (I do illustration work as my day job). I also wanted to make the instructions so my customers would have an easy, painless installation. I may have gone into too much detail on some steps, but I really don't know the mechanical ability of each customer. One gal purchased the kit and said "so easy, a girl can do it". There was only one problem with one of my oil coolers. That customer looked at the parts and thought it would be easy to install without the instructions. Big mistake. He had problems with the oil lines kinking and blocking oil to the cooler. Please follow the instructions and you will have no problems. At very the most, I would give it about 3 hours if you took your time and had a few beers. Q 3. Are there any permanent mods required? A 3. Only the cutting of the oil line. You can splice it back together with the clamps or replace it if you should ever want to remove the oil cooler. Q 4. I saw mentioned somewhere about selection oil cooler color? What is available? A 4. The cooler come in bare aluminum and powder coated black. The bare aluminum look much better and blend into the bike much better visually. Depending on who you talk to or what you read on the internet, they should cool better too. Q 5. Does the install require draining my oil? A 5. Yes. Q 6. How likely is it to need the bypass in temps down to 30 degrees Fahrenheit? A 6. I would recommend using a by-pass valve if you are riding A LOT at 30 degrees Fahrenheit. It really depends how much of your riding is at very low temperatures, weather you need the by-pass valve or not. You can put a strip of duct tape over the guard if you find yourself in cold temps. I live in Arizona and that is what I do. The by-pass valve can be added to your bike later if you don't order it with the kit. Q 7. Where do I sent my Paypal to? A 7. PayPal to: mark@mega.net Please look at the first page on my vendors page: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=652313 I give all of the options, prices, shipping cost, and ordering details. Q 8. What is the total for a HD unit for my 2012 xr650l? A 8. $279.00 add $15.00 for shipping in the USA. Please go to: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=652313 for detailed prices and ordering details. I hope this helps. Thanks again for looking at my oil cooler kits, Cheers, Mark
I really like the new design! I did some custom powder coating recently. Hopefully Mark doesn't see it as a hack to his design.
Hi Mark, I purchased one of your original kits for my xr600r and it's been great - did a long (3 weeks) and rough trip with multiple falls and no damage to the cooler. I also felt a lot more confident running the same oil for that long. Does the new mount system for the xr600 sit a bit closer in?
Thanks for the nice words about the oil cooler kit. The new mount system/guard does not reposition the cooler. Repositioned closer in, the cooler will be too close to the exhaust for my comfort. During my "long term in-field testing", (riding to the store this time) I got the chance to see how it holds up in a left, low-side crash. I went down going pretty fast on pavement, front end washed out, and the cooler never got close to the ground. I had all of the proper gear on with the exception of blue jeans. My left knee got ground down pretty deep. I am very happy with the position of the cooler. Tough way to test it though. Cheers, Mark
I'm sorry to hear of your accident, Mark. However, I'm glad your injuries were not more serious. Thank you for continuing to improve and sell your excellent oil cooler. Spud
