I just turned over 10k miles. No issues. Several Oil changes....I did replace the crap chain after 8k miles...it had a major kink. Once I added a Booster plug my fueling problems were much better. Several new F/I bikes suffer from being too lean...the TR is no exception....a "fooler" of some sort is needed IMHO..I really like the bike. 20 years from now I think it'll be known as a one or two year bike with a "cult" following. It's not without faults...but pretty damn good value...if you can find one. I don't have a local BMW dealer either. It seems most Adv. Rider guys avoid the dealer at all cost anyway...except for warranty problems. It is a gas and go bike. I reckon the overheating was a result of a air bubble. The dealer didn't follow directions at set-up. The stalling problems are almost always fixed with a "fooler" ..B/P ...IICE air...there are others. Buy it ...gas ..oil..BP or similar.. Ride..repeat.
Just in case someone is looking for a used one, there is one at Foothills BMW in Denver. I was down there getting parts for my Dakar and saw it. Oh so tempting to replace the ol Dakar and would go nicely with my TE450, but it is so reliable and built the way I like it. Has some farkles already on it. Think it was marked $6200.
Here's some more history on the bike http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=916322&highlight=tr650
yep....my old Terra. Still has the Seat Concepts tall seat, Ricochet skid plate, Touratech handguards, and the Wuka King on it. Somewhere around 2800 miles IIRC....
I now have my Terra in the garage with a whole 231 miles on it Very nice bike really enjoying thus far. Bought a few items for already and hope this will be a good commuter and semi-trail bike come next riding season. Items installed so far: Touratech handguards with spoilers Touratech adjustable shift lever with folding toe SW-Motech skid plate SW-Motech centerstand Power Commander 5 Powerlet Powerplug at handlebars Ram-mount on handbars Battery tender SAE dongle for overnight charging Have removed the evaportive canister from the bike; now it idles like it should.
Here is free easy mod for you... http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/exhaust-modification.31317/#post-289537
I've got some new video from a weekend trip of the Terra getting nasty in the rocks, in case anybody is interested. She is just rolling up on 6k miles this week without any problems, and I have been treating it like this the whole time . The worst thing about this video is that I wasn't even talking to the camera, just to myself. Does that make me crazy? <object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="//www.youtube.com/v/HwmcFLkkHHk?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/HwmcFLkkHHk?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
Hi everyone. Well I did it..a big deal for me...Pulled the trigger on Terra ABS ... Sadly only a couple left in Oz. Probably quite a few in the factory that may trickle out but anyway. So as I think and type I reflect on why. I was deciding tween Terra,Sertao, 6yo Dakar,G650GS, 800GS ,KLR650. Suzie,Yam 650,Tenere.even looked at KTM 690. You know ..the usual bunch of suspects. I expect to use it 50/50 Road/ rough roads/tracks but mainly latter .I already have R1200R with 80,000 glorious km . So what got me.. Engine ,EFI, Safari tank potential , better legs than BMW650 (yep 46 v 41 mm & Inverted) , price, warranty..a new bike has that well newness about it compared to a 7 yo bike. I know its a little heavy but lighter than 800GS and same weight as Sertao with better struts. Expect significant weight to carrying potential .Comfier seat than KTX given hundreds of km on tar before off road starts for me (otherwise I would have got a pure dirt bike.) and better high speed road manners cf KTM. Interestingly BMW was flogging off Sertaos at same price. Have downloaded options for farkles. Best bedtime reading there is. ' I guess with time I will know if I regret it. I suspect not. Some reviews have been exemplary apart from the motorcross crowd who dont understand why you would only trailer a bike to the dirt. Biggest CON...colour choice..wanted a faster bike you know black. Anyways just sayin' and thanks for reading.
Looks like Safari Tanks made something that will make me love the TR just a little bit more <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> You got'a love that they kept the TR's original tank look <?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:shapetype id=_x0000_t75 stroked="f" filled="f" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" oreferrelative="t" o:spt="75" coordsize="21600,21600"><v:stroke joinstyle="miter"></v:stroke><v:formulas><v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"></v:f></v:formulas><vath o:connecttype="rect" gradientshapeok="t" o:extrusionok="f"></vath><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shapetype>with it's wings <o></o> "Husqvarna Terra 650 long range Safari Tank<o></o> Litres: 32 (18 litres +plus 14 litre standard tank)<o></o> Colours: White, Red, Black, Translucent White" <o></o> AUS $690 - US $650<o></o> Rough calculation - I would go from about 170 mile to about 400 miles per tank - that is some serious mileage <o></o> Did anybody get a close look at these tanks?? <o></o> http://www.safaritanks.com.au/home/14-Husqvarna/78-Husqvarna-Terra-650/flypage.tpl.html
A plastic tank? No thanks. I'd rather have a metal one, which is not as easily ripped apart or fractured by a fall.
big plastic tanks are damn tough...you're much more likely to put a serious crease or puncture in a steel tank
Yep. If metal were tougher, we wouldn't have Pelican cases. Seriously, I have a small graveyard of metal tanks in my garage. Sent from the voices in my head and transcribed by their drinking buddy...
I have been in contact with Safari Tanks and they sent me a little more information about this tank. You will keep the original tank in place and remove the shrouds to install their tank over top. The thing I most concern about is they said a fuel supply line will need to be tapped into the existing tank and connected their extended tank. I'm waiting for them to release their detailed .pdf instructions to see exacting how this "tap" is made into the orginal tank. Not willing to put a permanant hole into my OEM tank if that is how it works. Just waiting to see how the install is done at this point. I like the look of the tank, having used one of their tanks on my TE 450. Never an issue with the tank or it's durability having many offroad falls with it.
I actually went with the IMS 6.6 gallon tank on my '06 KLR because I didn't want to add the weight of metal crash bars that I've seen bend & still have damage to the bike. Don't know how well the IMS tank will protect in a high speed, cartwheeling type accident but, on the VERY RARE occasions that I have flopped on mt a$$..... No damage at all.
