If you want to cross the Siberia alone be prepared. 05/22/2012 31 years old Japanese mototourist have been slaughter in the road Irkutsk-Chita, looks like that nothing missed - the tent, motorcycle, cell phone, clothes, money and other things have not been stolen. Police suppose that he have been killed when stay for the night not far away from the main road, close to Giphigen village. For the last 3 years this is the 3-rd murder (which I know) of the moto travelers in this area. All of them have been killed when they stay for the night rest with tent. All of them traveled alone. And police do not care. R.I.P.
not only at night. Aleksey was killed close to village ЖАННА, when he stopped for lunch ... If I remember it was last year? or two? edit: sorry my mistake. Aleksey aka Scutt stopped in night time at caffe. He wanted to put tent close by ...
Pfff... That's really a shame, again. In 2010 Scutt was killed in the region (between havarovsk and chita). This region really seems to be dangerous. Anyway, I traveled there and luckily nothing bad happened. My advice is to only stop in safe places and do not go for camping. Valken
here is info from Itar-Tass: http://www.itar-tass.com/c11/428751.html in Russian, so use google translator. Nothing more than Feeding Father said ...
Here are a few brief articles in English: http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/japanese-man-dead-in-siberia/459109.html http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/japanese-diplomat-to-visit-after-motorcycle-tourist-murdered-in-siberia/459116.html Here is another in Russian with info about a couple of similar incidents over the last few years: http://www.utro.ru/articles/2012/05/23/1048308.shtml Looks like this is about halfway between Ulan Ude and Chita, a bit west of Khilok near the 760 km marker on the Trans-Siberian. I think the police will make an arrest...having an unsolved murder of a foreigner in your jurisdiction would not be good for your career. I guess whether they arrest the right person is a different matter...
I did that route in 2004. I was warned a lot that it was dangerous to camp. I had to sometimes so I just hid very well. Not near anything- just ride through the trees far away from the road and sleep someplace that makes no sense.
That is correct solution.. All of them have been killed close to: main road, café and village. And by human (not a human by animal, looks like a human), not by bear or wolf or any other dangerous animals. My father always told me: you have to afraid human in forest, not any animals. And he is right.
When Scutt was killed in 2010 we were all marked. From that time we didn't received any information about his killer. When I cross from Chita to the eastern part, I didn't feel good. The police stoped me at Chita's exit just to have a talk. Later, when driving I received something like a bird "but could have been a stone" in the head. Later on, a guy told me I had nothing to fear in this region since there is no "bad guys". If my GPX logs are correct I slept very close to Znamenka. A friend of mine went sleeping in the deep forest, very far away from the street and everything.... During the night they have been awaken by the "forest children". They were claiming this place is their. They asked for tobacco mostly and leave. From that moments my friend couldn't sleep well since he expected the "big brother from the forest" to come. They were three bikers there. Luckily, nothing happened. AS for me, camping and Russia are two words that can not last in a positive sentence. You can beg me all you want, you won't have me camping in Russia.
eh? I was out in that area last summer and was told that the killer had been caught and convicted? Maybe not correct, does anyone know?
Could be interesting for you - "Wave of memory 2012" - motorcycle run from Moscow and Vladivostok to ЖАННА and back. In the memory of all motorcycle travelers which are not with us anymore. West wave will start at 1st July from Moscow, East wave from Vladivostok at 14th of July about. They meet each other in the place where Scutt have been killed 18-19 July. For those, who want to take this trip it could be good opportunity to do it not alone, but with other adventures. http://motoprobeg.htbs.ru/

Oh, I made a mistake, I can be in Moscow by July 1st. Romek, we'll fix the schedule when we'll meet. I'll be at your place by June 20th. Alex
Alex are you going to travel from Warsaw to Moscow 10 days? Anyway, will wait for you in Warsaw. Alik, talked few minutes ago with one of organizer. If your offer is still "valid" , I will join them in Челябинск 4th July evening, or next day in the morning. I got permission, or invitation to travel in group. Sounds great, I like it :) Romek
It will be great but I will busy with work - no chance for long trips. It does not work at side also. You are both very welcome. Glad to help you. Will escort you from Ekaterinburg to Cheliabinsk.
Hum, I need to go to St. Petersburg to meet Kirill but I can change my plan and manage to follow a different road at that time. I wish I can join too. I don't really know how to proceed but we'll definitely find a way. Alex
It sounds like the Russian police have arrested two suspects for this crime, and are looking for more accomplices. Good job by the Russian police, I read an article that said that they had interviewed more than 1000 potential witnesses and were looking for more, and that the local governor was personally leading the investigation. Hopefully they've got the right guys and they will go away for a long long long time.
I just read the news on the journal: http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/...r-murder-of-japanese-motorcyclist/459632.html :/
