Ok, so after lurking here for over a year and reading the entire thread. I finally got one. It is a '12 matt black one from Myers Motorcycles in Asheville, NC. It has been about thirty years since I had a motorcycle......I forgot how much fun it is!!
Hi guys this is my first time posting, So I currently have a 2005 Triumph Bonneville T100 and I love it for doing road riding and have taken it on some pretty bad roads in the back country between California highways 299 and 36. I am not thinking of getting rid of this motorcycle but was thinking about setting up a second one for more heavy duty fire roads and some mild off road areas. Can a Bonneville T100 set up with better shocks and converted to the high pipes get the same clearance as a Scrambler? I figure if I change the front sprocket to a 17T, or even a 16T, that I can get about the same felt torque as what the 270 degree crank motor puts out. It may be sacrilege to say but I could care less about how the engine sounds and am much more worried about the performance being as good as I can get out of this frame. I could use some input on the best shocks to be using but cost is also a factor at most I would be looking at the $700 range and would rather keep it lower, I know this has been covered before in posts that I had read but many were 3-5 years old so if anyone has current info that would be very useful. Because a Bonneville uses 1" handle bars it was difficult to locate a motocross bar that would fit but found these: http://www.biltwellinc.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=185 I was also planing on putting an Arrow 2:1 on it and know that I need to get the bracket and right side cover for that modification. Used Bonnevilles are much easier to find than Scramblers and unfortunately I can't afford to buy a new motorcycle, only used. Plus I like carbureted way more than the new fuel injected so I am looking at only 2005-2007 Bonnevilles and 2006-2007 Scramblers as options. So what do you guys think? Probably that I am crazy... :) Norris
After I bought a Thruxton, I loved it so much that i decided to sell my Tiger 1050 and build a Scrambler the way I thought ik should have been build. I started with a '08 Scrambler. Because I wanted one with carbs and a black engine. I did a 21" and 18" conversion. To do this I have used a DRZ400E frontfork and lengthened the swingarm by 49mm. I'm running a 1,6 x 21" excel rim in the front and a 4,25 x 18" excel rim at the rear. I'm running Hyperpro rearshocks. As regards to the performance I put on a Arrow exhaust, K&N's, a AI removal and a remapping. Because I think a Scrambler sould be a one person bike I removed the passengerpegs and put on a singleseat. Because off the new wheelsizes, the original speedo didn't work anymore. I changed it for a digital one from Motogadget. In addition to that I changed the headlight, the footpegs, the colour, the rearfender and light and handlebars. This week I have mounted a full floating 320 Brembo brakedisc and made some brackets to mount a low frontfender. This month I will be mounting a spring supported chaintensioner and I will have the seat reupholstered in leather. When the weather clears up a little bit I will make some new photos.
How does that front end feel off road compared to the stock? Do you know how much travel it has front and rear?
a LOT of cool scramblers posted on the last few pages...thanks everyone for sharing, and know that a lot of us lurkers are watching and waiting for more pics/mod info.
The new front end is a world of difference. The stock one bottoms out relatively easy. The frontfork has a travel of 235mm and I don't know how much travel there is in the rear.
I will try to make some more pictures as soon as possible. It will have to wait until I've got my seat back form the upholsterer.
I haven't posted here in a looong time, but I sold my Husqvarna TE610 a while back and found my self lusting after another push-button bike to keep me on the road when my vintage bikes are down. Since I already have a garage full of 40's to 60's Triumphs, (and a rigid Panhead that doesn't do so well in the dirt) I figured the next logical step would be a modern Triumph. I read all the reviews and hundreds of pages of this thread, and after talking to my brother who owns an '06 Bonneville that he beats the holy hell out of, I decided to go with a gloss black Scrambler. Almost 500 miles on it in now, and my only regret is not buying it sooner. This might just be the most fun I've had on two wheels (except for a paraplegic ex-model I met a while ago but thats a whole 'nother story...) Anyways, made a few mods as soon as I got it home and have plenty more planned. I went with the solo seat with rack to increase gluteal comfort on long rides, but the rack sucks- I may fab something up that's more usable. The stock scrambler bars only feel good when standing up on the pegs, so I nabbed some LSL Flat Track Bars. I then de-baffled the pipes by trimming about an 1/8" off the tip and removing the perforated disc and restrictor tube. Yanked the intake snorkel, then added a K&N. I honestly can't tell the difference with the K&N and just the de-snorkeling, so you may want to save your money. I'm planning on adding a 7" headlight because this 5 3/4" light is a dangerous joke, and some smaller/brighter signals and taillight since the big chrome ones don't suit the baike as well as they could. Also going to upgrade the tires, rear shocks and the pipe eventually. Going to give the Mefo Explorers a try unless someone can convince why I shouldn't. I'm thinking about getting the $299 Hagon rear shocks with adjustable pre-load and the Mass Moto Mojave pipes because I fckn love the way they look and sound. I imagine they would free up a little power too- can anyone share any experience with any of those items? Thanks in advance, Pete
I should post in this thread more, as this thread and Davorallyfans ride reports were some of the larger factors in me getting my scram. its got 11000km on it now, mostly commuting but a fair few day trips aswell. Not many mods (yet) Skid plate and headlight grille since new. Gel seat - that gets boiling hot:eek1 if not parked in the shade during Aussie summer. Mt60 rear tyre. It needs new tyres front and back, anyone here tried Mt60 front-scorpion trail rear, or a any suggestions for a longer wearing rear and a front that is good for 50/50 bitumen/gravel? Andy strapz a bag in oilskin - oh, and its got an alarm system
Ha Ha! At last reached the bloody end! My kids went to University and graduated since I started reading this thread! Anyone got any experience of the MAS Ally mudguards or equivalents? Pretty jealous of you colonial chaps that have all these dirt roads and fire roads to scoot about on.....seems we don't have too many equivalents here in the UK....any Brits out there know of some good off road riding?....I remember Salisbury Plain used to look pretty good but that was from the inside of a Landrover being chased by "Russians" about 20 years ago.
Hey Simon, Salisbury Plain is one of the best places in UK, you just have to avoid the range wardens!!! We've got Dartmoor down here, but the walkers try to kill you with their death looks!! Enjoy the bike mate. Ali
Pete - before you go bigger unit you could try brighter bulb. I substituted a street legal 80% brighter (but similar wattage) headlight bulb in the stock Scrambler headlight and it made a sufficiently big difference for me. The bulb format is common or garden H4, so most good auto parts depots will have brighter options available.
