So on a ride yesterday when I shut off my bike it failed to restart. battery seemed dead. Thankfully someone had cables and it would fire with a jump. The bike had been on a tender and never given me a problem before. when I got home the battery was low (11.5v) so it did not return to charge or want to start after being ridden 10 miles after being jumped the third time. The only major change is I replaced the headlight with an LED unit that draws 28 watts @ 1.9 amps. Should be lower than the standard Halogen. After being on a tender all last night (green light this morning) here are the stats. Bike off = 12.9 Full load, Light on, blinker on, starter pushed, it goes to 10.2 - 10.8 Running 11.9 fast rev 12.2 So bad battery Right? No parasitic draw present what is the resting range for a healthy battery in our bikes? what is the normal reading for the bike running? (charging output) what is an acceptable low reading when fully loaded?
well, as load tested by starter, it doesnt seem like it drops that much, but charging doesnt sound up to snuff. If should be hitting 13 easy when revving anywhere above idle. This 11 stuff is not good news It should be resting in the 12.2-12.5 range, I believe. Battery is a good start, then regulator, imo.
Battery holds a charge fine. Drains as the bike runs. Not charging. Off to the dealer to see if they will warranty it. Guess no riding this weekend.
At 30,000m I'd say if the 70hr checks were done by the book he would have done about 6 crankshaft & piston sets by now - it would have been cheaper to just buy a new bike, a more appropriate one. It does say a lot for the gearbox though, not destroying itself with the road abuse and no cush drive on the bike.
Has anyone done a retro fit of the forks? Fitted the series 2 forks onto a series 1 G450X? I am wondering if the forks fit the series 1 tripple clamps or if they need replacing too? Does anyone have series 2 forks for sale at a reasonable price? Maybe I should just have the Marzochi's worked on by a pro?
I had my 09' forks worked on by Fast Bike Industries, new valves and springs and tuned for my weight and riding. They work great, cost appx $450. http://www.fastbikeindustries.com/ Jack
So with my no charging problem the bike went to the dealer (nice guys) Good news: Stator and wiring harness for broken tps sensor covered under warranty. Bad news, parts coming from germany so no riding until after the new year. Oh and it needs a clutch. All at 3600 miles and 112 hours! How many Pistons and valves did the 30k mile Commuter guy go through? Even in parts thats major dough. Yeah! btw. Crank shaft was done under warranty for PO 600 miles ago.
ouch, even with some repairs covered under warranty. good news is the ride will be good to go in January.
I can't imagine a dealer replacing the crank and not advising for at least new rings and/or piston but I guess it could happen. At 100 hours my exhaust valves were fairly coned into the cylinder head. I'm coming up on the second 100 hours and probably do a tear down next summer as I'm riding it a lot less lately with all the offroad racing on my Husky. I would advise seeing exactly what was replaced during the crank replacement.

That G450 sure is impressive. Son hadn't touched it for two months, just left it in the garage and yesterday he was over and decided to take it out for a quick ride. Temperature was -10 overnight, -5C by the time he got to it, tons of snow on the ground, but the bike fired right up as if it was already warmed up! My DR650 never starts that easily even when it's warm out.
Those of you with power commanders. Did your mileage improve any? I'm having to leave it in low power on some of the longer rides to avoid pushing it. I'm loosing about 20 miles of range in high power mode, and hoping to get at least some of that back. From what I've read, the bike is running rich in high power mode.
