With my first beemer R100GS, year 1989, in the Alps in France. The bike is loaded with all I needed for a 3 week camping trip. The pic is from about 1990 and in this time "wild camping" in the forests and at lakesides was still accepted by the local authorities. When they came for control and asked us to leave the place we answered "we have drunk to much vine and we can't drive now". They accepted and asked to leave the next morning. By this way we have travelled around for 2 or 3 weeks without once being on a camping. The hygiene was held in a creek or or at a fountain in a village. Those were wonderful times. Only a few years later campgrounds appeared everywhere and wild camping was illegal in these regions.
Another road pic from a travel with a friend on our Moto Guzzi in the italien Alps. The pic is from about 1987 and has been scaned with a very simple all-in-one-scanner.
Wife and I bought a Harley a couple years ago and have done quite a few road trips on it. We like touring on the HD because its basically clothing and a credit card...very simple. We now have a GSA with BMW/Touratech side bags and top case and we're looking to expand touring to include our favorite camping destinations. We have done a lot of backpacking over the past 10 years, so we have all the smaller/ultralight camping gear, which should make the transition easier...not to mention lighter on the pocketbook! I want to do some packing and test out where everything will go and how its all going to fit on the bike. I can't see how to accomplish packing for 2-up without having softbags mounted to the tops of the panniers. So, my request is to see some pics of bikes loaded up for camping for TWO people. This wouldn't even be a challenge if I were riding solo...but 2-up and camping seems to be another ballgame. Any pics, I'd love to see them!! Thanks guys.
