Bow season starts Saturday here in Georgia; can't wait. Fe Boy will be bow hunting for the first time this year with his 43lb recurve. Fe Dad will be just around the corner, Stands are hung, White Oaks are loaded, Persimmon trees are loaded, Come on Saturday!
Archery season starts Sept. 29th in Texas. Crossbows sighted in and ready to continue to kill streak.
Now, if Texas only had real deer to replace their herds of Bambi's. They still hold a parade if you get one over a 100lbs?
Fe Boy has matched wits with Fe Mother and lost; he will be spending the weekend in his bedroom. Disrespect doesn't go over well with her. So my 9 yr old daughter, Fe Girl, informs me that she wants to hunt with me on the opening day of bow season! the set-up is as follows: a smelly ghillie suit on said daughter, a lock-on designed for one with an added seat, a safety harness as she will undoubtedly fall asleep, a bad wind, a pouty face, a semi-patient father, $8.00 worth of breakfast at McDonald, Priceless! The reality is that if I shoot something, she will leap out of the tree with a knife between her teeth to deliver the coup de grace! She is definitely a chip off the old block head! A bit of advice: Hunt with your kids and you won't have to hunt for your kids!
Looks like a lot of fun. I have not been hunting in years. I used to like to dove hunt a lot. My uncle had a guy he worked with who's family owned a farm over in Alabama we would go hunt. Those were fun times. It looks like you are passing on the tradition nicely. Out of curiosity, what part of Ga are you hunting? I need to find somewhere to go dove hunting again. I am looking online, I just don't want to end up in a field with 50 other people all shooting at the same birds.
Hello from a new hunter. I never thought much about hunting until recently. (seems deer are "everywhere" these days) So, I asked my hunting cousin to take me hunting with him sometime. He invited me to go with him to Greaton Plantation, in SC on the Savannah River. They have 25,000 acres w/ 100 deer stands. There's lots of deer, hogs, turkey, coyote and they have strict rules about only shooting bucks with a minimum 15" rack width, but since I was a total beginner was given a 1 time pass, so I could keep any buck that I shot. Beginner's luck was on my side, and for the 3 days/6 hunts I shot 3 hogs, 1 coyote, and a beautiful 14 3/4" 8-point buck that weighed 185 lbs. I only saw 2 bucks, and shot mine on the last afternoon hunt. I didn't "size him up", since I didn't have to (or really know how!), but I knew he looked good and I probably wouldn't see a bigger buck, and likely wouldn't even see another one at all. I'd shot the hogs from 130 yards and the coyote from 100 yards, but the buck was only about 30 yards away. It was pretty exciting, and all the other guys were amazed by my luck. But I also felt guilty, sorta feeling like I'd cheated. I really want to learn to hunt "the hard way". I want to start from the very basics of going into the woods, here near home, and learning how to read the animals tracks & feeding habits. I want to set up a tree stand or two and a feeder by myself, and see what I can naturally find in the wild. We live in the woods in Sugar Grove, NC and are next to the Pisgah & Cherokee forests. We don't have hogs here, but we have lots of deer, turkey, coyote, bear, etc. I have a 4-wheeler and a dual sport, so I plan to scout for places to hunt while I'm scouting for new trails to ride. Since it's getting late in the hunting season I'll just try a little stalking, or just sitting along a ridgeline nearby this year. After I learn to hunt "the hard way" I won't feel guilty when I go back to Greaton Plantation next time, and I'll be out of beginner's luck too.
I'm really having fun "now". I'm just taking a snack break from skinning the deer's head, so I can do a "European mount". I got the skin off of it, and still have remove the eyes & brain before boiling the skull. Then I'll soak the skull in hydrogen peroxide to bleach it white. (You sure can learn a lot of handy things online!) I decided to do the European mount because we're planning to display it outside, above the front door of our cabin. (Also because I didn't have $500 to pay a taxidermist, nor did I want to have it's eyes staring at me "from now on"! ...I'm still feeling a little guilty...) Well.....got'a go dig out some eye-balls & brains.
Just shot a 8 point yesterday. With a gun though I believe my daughter and I saw this buck a couple weeks ago while hunting. We were 300 yards away or so across the farm way out of range. But yesterday he was only 25 yards and I wasn't about to pass him up.
