I saw that Santcuary website. So I bought a KZ1000. It already had Keihin FCR 35mm flatslides ($1400 or so), had been rebuilt (all stock, I don't know why, it costs the same to do a big bore with some cams), and had been sitting for a long time. I paid $500 for it, and it came with $3500+ in receipts. The bodywork sucked, it had an oil leak and the carbs weren't sitting all the way down in the spigots, they hit the camchain tensioner, and it wouldn't idle. I put a manual cam chain tensioner on it, set the carbs all the way into the spigots, and remarkably, it idled. I put a new gasket under the alternator cover, but it still leaked from there. I mooched an Aprilia set of Showa upside down forks, no wheel or brakes or anything, and I started amassing parts. Then I started pricing things. And.......it was going to cost a lot more money than I wanted to put in a 30 year old bike. Have you priced those Ohlins that are on most of those bikes? Over $1200. Same with most of the other stuff.

So I sold it for about twice what I put into it.

    My old hack:

    It was born a 1985 VF750F Interceptor.

    Currently altered bits:

VF1000F front end (41MM forks), resprung and cartridge emulators. Air lines welded closed. dropped int eh triple clamps.

CBR600 F2 wheels front and rear. Battleaxe radials.

CBR600 F2 rear shock, resprung and revalved for the weight. Slightly extended to raise rear and more weight on the nose.

    Stainless braided brake lines.

    Rear fender eliminated.

Various other small bits and bobs.

Currently torn down and in progress:

    RC24 front floating rotors

RC51 front calipers and RC51 mater cylinder and associated RC51 bar switches/throttle.

RC15 dual square headlights and upper fairing fabrication to match. Essentially, same as the VF but with a widened headlight opening.

    HID lighting.

Glass fuse block swap to ATO fuse block.

VF1000F side covers (just because I like 'em!)

Hindle 4 into 1 pipe with a GSXR750 muffler, mockup teaser:

Main fuse/starter solenoid swap to a 30A ato style fuse from the OEM "foil" joke.

Custom rear sets (mill them myself)

CBR600RR unit prolink swingarm and associated suspension.

RC51 rear master cylinder and brake caliper (same as the CBR one oddly enough, just gold anodized to match fronts)

Wrap it all up with 1983 red/white paint scheme (because my first interceptor was a brand new one from the dealer back in 83 and it was red and white)

This winter is gonna be busy.....

I'm not much of an adventure rider anymore at 47 years old. I'm beaten and broken from my job:

Search and Rescue Flight Engineer. After about 20 mins on the bike, I have to get off. Numb, sore, etc.....

But the old 85 VF has put wheels in the following provinces: Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC. It's touched both the Atlantic and the PAcific in it's travels. It just hasn't driven from one side of he coast to the other. It's usually gotten to those places in a moving truck and then done local explorations.....

that's Tom's bike, he calls it "mutant VF1000R".

You can check it out at VFRdiscussion.com or VFRWorld.com

Sebspeed has an interesting build there also, but has let it sit idel for about a year or so now.

Hopitt88 (Kel) has a nice build there also.

Building and old VF is kind of an odd thing if you've got dedication and/or fabrication skill; you all get to know each other sooner or later.....

    Something like this?

This is a Martin frame for a 750 Honda. I'd like to build something similar.

Greatwhite, with all of the RC-51 parts on your bike, is there a reason that you didn't just have steering stem custom machined and add the entire RC-51 front end?

good thing it was not made for you then. I happen to dig the streetfighter look. and as a brilliant mechanic told me years ago, there is an ass for every seat.

i didnt say it would not be awesome to ride, because i bet it sure as hell is, and i do like streetfighters.

however, the look is not right.

it would look better if the tail section was dropped lower, and slightly extended, and if the exhaust was kinked a little bit more and had a lower height. the lines would then be cleaned up, and it would look much better.

btw, the comment, "an ass for every seat," is not complimentary, its derogatory, and the term is generally used to signify poor taste, or bad design. at my shop, i currently have 3 L1 master techs, 2 A techs, 2 C techs, and 2 general service peeps under my control. the first 5 techs are brilliant mechanics, and i have heard the same comment from them many times, always in regards to a vehicle that would otherwise be pretty respectable, minus some questionable mods or styling. what that comment means, is... not an ass in a seat (a rider), it refers to a 'jackass, or an idiot.' it is not a friendly comment.

Just meant that every one has a ride, no offense was intended and I implied my ass would have a hell of a time in that seat, I love that look, personally, I would mute the colors and not go for a polished frame, but it was not made for me:1drink

Looks like a heavily modified Landrover LWB with Cab and pickup section.

Should be plenty available, mods to your discretion:evil
