I've been working trying to get the vibration on my SR41 (with the SR43 engine) under control for the past few weeks. I've finally got the jetting mostly sorted and the bike runs well in all gears. I changed the final drive to a 15/49 since the SR43 engine has a higher primary drive ratio this give the same gearing as the SR41 with 15/47....or very close to it. This has made the bike much easier to ride and made the ratios much more useful. Anyway.....Vibration. I'm using Renthal Carmichael High bend 7/8 in bars on my bike. The main factor I found in smoothing out the handlebar vibration on the SR41/42 is the state of torque on the nut attached to the handlebar clamp stud underneath the top triple clamp. Tightening this nut down hard will transmit much more vibration into the bars. The best solution I found was to loosen the nut down to the cotter pin (that's what the hole in the stud if for if your bike is pin-less). Stradling the bike push the bars forward and backward. There should be very obvious PLAY in the system. Then tighten the nut (use of nylok or self locking nuts is important here) to the point that this play in the bars just disappears...add about 1/2 turn more and leave the nut there. Barkbusters: Everytime I put the barkbuster/lever protectors back onto the bars the Vibration increased dramatically. Combinations: I played with different combinations of (a) Barkbusters using both Cycra and Acerbis models (b) DRZ400 bar end weights (generally free at most Suzuki shops if you know the guys....found in a oil stained box next to the recycling bin) (c) Ricor Vibranators (vibration reducing harmonic system) After trying all the above combination/permutations of the above, I found that my bike was smoothest with: DRZ400 bar end weights and NO barkbuster/lever protection and NO Vibranators.....just the weights. In fact I'm putting the standard Suzuki handguards (plastic only mounts to the lever pivots) from my SR43 back on this bike and will try to find a pair of Suzuki SR41/42 handgurads in the future. Of course, your experience may vary depending bar type used and your tolerance (or lack thereof) to vibration. I'm not saying that this makes the Big feel like a Goldwing but it lets me ride the bike without my hands going numb. Hopefully this will help
The vibranators worked best at low revs like 2500 - 3500 but not 4-5 thousand where I spend most of my road time. They helped when I had the SR41 engine in the bike but I'm better with the DRZ400 weights with the SR43 engine. The SR41 engine will be taken down and rebuilt soon so I should be back to normal (at least what I consider normal) fairly soon. But for now, this is what I found. Experimentation does provide benefits as there are many variables involved. My solution is likely not for everyone but if you don't like the way your bike feels, play with some things. Make one change at a time and eventually you'll find a solution.
Jabroka, sorry to see you sold the 43 but for that price a wise move , catch you down the track. Lioyd, selling yours too, are going to raise it back up again for the resale Ray , just wondering your handle bars do they have a cross brace, maybe this makes a difference good or bad I don,t know. The suzuki standard bar end weights certainly way heaps, well the 650 ones do so it looks like more weight less vibes . The ozz bark busters allso sell weights that go on the outside of them, I have never tried them so I carn,t report on them , I use the bark buster VPS ones myself on some bikes and find they are good for leaver protection because they step down to the leavers not like Acerbis that I have on the yellow bike . AND GET SOME PUMPERS .
Cross brace makes a lot of difference. As well as offsetting bars in clamps for few mm from centered.
Yes indeed...kinda more of getting off bothersome vibes than really getting rid of vibes, but worked for me
I well realize that there are so many variables here that what works for me is truly and individual solution. However, the discussion did bring out some "tips" at least one of which I've not heard of before. (decentering) Yes, I did think of the crossbrace. Mine has the ability to be unbolted at a clamp-type fixture. Tried it both ways with no real perceived affect. "Decentering" I have NOT yet tried but will give it a go a report back....good idea, that. Do Pumper Carbs smooth out the engine? Changing from the CV carb to the FCR carb on my DRZ400 did make the engine smoother. Can I expect the same on the Big? I'm still playing with an easily modded foam filter for the bike using the standard airbox. I know that a complete rebuild is the best way but I'm trying to find something that a normal guy with just a few tools can do to improve the bike. On the whole.....I like the 750 engine best.
If you don't want to speculate about lean/rich issues, I certainly wouldn't recommend the use of an O2 sensor. Regards, Derek
Guys, I received the pistons today! Thanks to Ray (Ladder106) who helped me out with shipping. For those who do not know - 2nd oversize pistons (for 106mm bore) are not available any more from Suzuki. So I ordered a custom made set of 4 forged pistons from Ross Racing in California. They turned out beautiful. I had to buy 4 because it was their minimum order. Ray has taken one for his 750. I will keep 2 for myself, so one piston is up for sale. Ross made piston + pin set is 84 grams lighter compared to the Suzuki's 1st oversize piston set. Some features: Forced oiling on pins (oil scraped from cylinder wall by oil rings is forced to pin through special channels). Lubricative skirt coating. Top Seal rings. Spirolox pin retaining rings instead of wire. Anyone interested please PM me for price and shipping cost. The price will be lower than Suzuki original parts cost but not much. I will cross post it on drbig.info forum, too.
That's what the package stated. Haven't read all the instructions that came with them however. Don't really know what "gapless" means. Never dealt with that before. Opinions?
No, they are not gapless. I asked them to supply conventional rings. I think they've included gapless rings instruction sheet as an advertising material only. There is some info on TotalSeal webpage, including gapless rings: http://www.totalseal.com/TechPage.aspx
I am currently rebuilding a DR 750 in the shed in the cold heres a fw pics of before and after img]https://www.advrider.com/advrider-photobucket-images/images/s/spenspics_DSCF0012_zps7e266a29.jpg[/img]
