Where are the singles?

The deal is the simpler the machine the easier it is to work on. "newer" technology is great but can be polarizing to work on, shim in bucket valves are not as easy as screw and nut. Water cooled has radiators extra hoses water pump it clutters things. I'm only 28 but I just like the look of air/oil cooled engines (not a harley fan). Water cooled are covered with fairings and are "industrial" lumps that are efficient but are hidden away. You think that the technology we have today and modern metallurgy the air oil cooled should still be a viable option I guess.

obviously you guys see that i have a vfr, its a great bike but i loath doing a valve inspection on this thing, and taking it to a dealer will at least cost me $500 granted it only needs to be done every 20k but that's every two and years for me!

I don't see the fascination with complicated, expensive technology, particularly for a street bike.

Even the most basic bikes will do everything I want, anything more is a waste of my time and money.

looked at the bikes at a local bmw/triumph dealer last week.
i was culture-shocked by the unrecognizable expensive STUFF bristling all over these machines. and thats only what you can see, the wiring must be absolutely overdone & alien. my next-if ever-street machine will just about have to be vintage. 25 horsepower is enough to have all the fun i want

All the hipsters are buying your favoured UJM's and making cafe bikes out of them.

Yup bought my 07 right after college and just got my first job, I'm never gonna sell it! I was just seeing what other single cylinder options were out there for road going only since I'm such a big fan of the DR i want more thumpers!

I've got a client who works at a bike building shop near me, and we recently picked up a nearly running (just needs a carb cleaning...) 1994 Savage in surprisingly good shape for $250.... and we gots ta thinkin'

We went looking at the RYCA site, and liked it, but wanted something that felt more vintage. Then I found this photo of one that was built in Britain somewhere, and we both like that one even more!
I photoshopped my own 1969 Suzuki T350 tank onto it and came up with the mock-up photo below...
Ours will have clubman's and no stock battery box or air box at all. Harley Dyna mufflers bolt right on and can be had for pennies. I haven't posted anything because we haven't even started doing anything with it at all, just collected some parts and brainstormed a bit. I'll start a thread once we really have something to show, but just wanted to chime in here.
I think the Savage could be a great power plant for a retro single (I hope so!!) and they can be found cheap all day long, so it's easy to throw a little extra money at them.
