Looking across the bottom edge of South Park and the Arkansas river valley at the Sange de Christos. We hiked up about 2,000 feet from the truck looking for grouse and rabbit.

I've never hunted open land like that. I hunt mountains that you would call hills and hunt the funnels I guess it may be the same kind of.

We have smaller stuff here that behaves the same as far as terrain goes. There are funnels created by trees and gulleys on that big mountain in the middle of nowhere. Saw lots of elk tracks and could smell them at one point, but never did see the elk in that big expanse.

Thanks to both you and Shady for the nice comments. My wife and I do really enjoy the kids and our hunting trips.

This hen was the luckiest bird in the field today. Landed smack dab in the middle of the parking lot with about 2 dozen of the orange army surrounding her. Why lucky? Weapons must be unloaded in the parking lot of the WMA here. Sadly, nothing went into my bag this morning, though I did see more birds than I thought I would. The October snow storm did lots of damage to the state pheasant farm. Many birds escaped, and many were killed.

It was a beautiful day to take my gun for a walk.

A typical Jackson County Wisconsin 9 pointer. Hey, the freezer was empty,,,,

Gun is a Remington Model 673 in .350 Rem Mag. Swift A Frame 225 grain handloads.

Dropped him in his tracks at about 80 yards.

Lot of Club! Beautiful Rifle though!

I use my trusty Winchester 94 30-30 for deer and a Savage 7MM Mag for anything bigger.

    8:55 AM opening day. NEF .243 @ 60 yards

Shot right through the windpipe, only ran about 10 yards.

Sadly, this it a pretty respectable buck in the U.P. these days. People shoot some monsters but overall they shoot too many bambis.

But, after seven years of passing on spikes, forks, and other small deer, I'll take it. I would have liked to let it go but its been so long I took it. Venison backstraps for dinner tonight!
