I meant to ask Bob (or anyone else) if they knew what all of these old metal things were used for...

I believe they are pillars from an old bridge, it looks like the current one is number 4

They look more like tanks and not load bearing. They appear to be riveted or bolted and I wouldn't think they would be very sturdy. Have not seen another bridge with that type of support, but placement would make sense for bridge supports.

Might they have been for erosion control around the bridge? Kind of like the ones north of the Pearl River bridge on Lakeland?

On my next trip down there, might have to crawl around on it and see if I can tell more about it or see a manufacture plate that might give a clue...

They are rivited steel plates as old boilers or tanks but are filled with concrete. You can see the concrete foundation with a short section of the support still embeded.

That makes sense. Looking at the picture again, I can see two of the larger diameter cylinders with a smaller diameter one connecting the two. I guess the way they have fallen over confused me... Oh, well mystery solved. Still can't wait to ride out that way again! :lol3

Decided Christmas Eve was a good day for a ride... New knobbies installed and all... Met DQ at the Waffle House around 7 and by 7:30, we were gassing up and hitting the road...

Still a little damp as we gassed up in Brandon:

We finally make it to the mythical road that DQ had heard about...

My camera doesn't do too well at catching things while moving...

    Another missed old shack...

Appears the loggers had the Eve off, too!

Then DQ gets this gleam in his eye and decides since I got the new Tiger a little dirty, it's time to go all out!

Stopped by Boykin Church for a break... The ladies get the plush treatment!!!

    Pure luxury!

Some of the FS signs are rather hidden...

But the trees seem to block the roads better than the signs!!!

Then DQ decided we needed to try some single track... At least with an orange bike and an orange jersey, it's easy to play "Where's DQ!?" :lol3

    Didn't know about this one:

We finally give up after every road dead ends, so we make our way out to 35 and head towards Raleigh seeking lunch... Passed a new building with a sign that read "Back Side Ribs" or something like that... Hmmm... :evil
    [IMG]

Belly's full, we start winding our way back towards Brandon
    [IMG]

    Missed an old church
    [IMG]

    A few sweepers

My muddy Tiger, new no more.... :eek1
    [IMG]

Thanks for letting me follow you around, DQ. A new, lower gear, sprocket was waiting on door step when I got home and I needed it today!!!! :deal

New tires were great. Lots of slick places, mud, water crossing, etc and they did great!

Just a shout out to DQ. Are you the one we met in Utah at the filling station in Esclante with your friend? Just wondering how the rest of your trip went. I,m Greg ffrom Flatland Racing in Emporia Ks. I was with Mr. Wizard and we rode out from Salida Co. Really enjoyed the trip and Utah. Enjoyed the pictures from MS. My daughter used to live in Clevland as hubby was a football coach at Delta State. Take care, Greg
