Spanish Immersion Class in Banamichi


Episcopal Border Ministries presents a week long Spanish immersion class will be held in Banamichi, Mexico starting on Sunday, March 10th running through Saturday, March 16th, 2013. The Details:

The cost is $600 per person and includes the following:

• Transportation to and from Naco, Arizona
• Lodging - based on double occupancy. For single occupancy add $180.
• Food - two meals per day included
• Tuition and materials

Participants will stay at the Hotel Los Arcos the number one rated hotel in Banamichi in tripadvisor.com.


There will be optional excursions available during the week including a trip to a hot spring, a visit to a local ranch where they make the famed Bacanora liquor, a tour covering the history of the Sonoran River Valley, a visit to view ancient petroglyphs and more! The course will be taught by Guillermo Retana. Guillermo is Department Chair of Languages/Communication and Media Arts at Cochise College. Guillermo will be assisted by other native Spanish speakers. The class is limited to 30 participants. Students will take an assessment test prior to the course to place them into the proper group level. The classes will include:

• Small group study
• Emphasis on conversational Spanish
• Real life exercises
• Follow up resources after the classes end

The tentative schedule for the class is as follows:

• 8am - Breakfast
• 9am - Class starts
• 12:30pm - Noon meal
• 2pm - Optional excursions

A $150 deposit is required to enroll in the class with the balance due upon arrival. The deposit may either be paid online or by check. You will have the option to choose paying by check during the checkout process. The deposit is refundable until February 24th.

Los Arco's is a great place to stay if entering Mexico.
An easy couple hundred miles to Tom's place, after getting all the paperwork done at the border,
Los Arco's makes a perfect stop for the first day in country. Laid back and beautiful hotel to get into the Mexican pace. I can't wait to return. Till then.

You should post more often, took me forever to find this thread! Can you recommend routes from the border and heading south for riders who want to see some dirt roads?

From the AZ crossings there are not a lot of through dirt roads. Most areas are large ranches and Ejidos and the the roads have locked gates. Some you can get around some not. Some land owners are cool, others are not. Some just don't want you there for business reasons.

The good news/bad news is that a lot of the roads have had no maintenance in several years and some are reverting to dirt with the added fun of some broken pavement. Where are you thinking of crossing and where do you want to go?

Getting really nice here in Northern Sonora. Time for a quick getaway from Phoenix, Tucson even So Cal. Come on down. This part of Sonora is peaceful and calm, full of friendly people who want to make your visit the best it can be, Did I mention great roads and riding? Great routes to the Pacific route south and to Copper Canyon come through Banamichi and the Rio Sonora.

March, April and early May are some of the best months to ride in Sonora. Warm and dry, the landscape greening up and wonderful friendly people. If you are heading south, come by. We are the western route to Copper Canyon and to the Pacific routes.

Coming up on May already. It's still a great time to ride the Rio Sonora. Great riding from here to Creel, Alamos, San Carlos and points south.

We have a new chef cooking amazing Mexican dishes and maybe, if your timing is right, pizza in our mesquite fired adobe oven. You know he can cook when a restaurant owner from San Carlos says he had the best chile relleno he has ever had here at Los Arcos. Discount for ADV'rs.

OK, after much thought, discussion, hand-wringing and analysis for the best dates for a meet up in Banamichi, I threw a dart at the calendar and came up with Nov 11, 12, 13. This is 2 weeks before Thanksgiving. Of course you can come and visit on your own schedule at any time. We are almost never not here.

Banamichi is a small pueblo of about 3000 people. We are about 135 miles from either Nogales, AZ and Bisbee, AZ, a little more from Agua Prieta and a bit over 100 miles north of Hermosillo. We have a gas station, an OXXO, Neveria and restaurants. The town is clean, safe and full of friendly, welcoming people. We have a small working silver mine near town.

Barring a late season hurricane the weather should be mostly dry. Some of the river crossings will be wet but not too deep. Temps typically mean warm days and cool sometimes chilly nights. Typical of the desert are day night swings of 30 to 40 degrees F. Of course if you plan to ride up higher into la sierra you can expect colder weather.

Any chill can be remedied by a sip or two of Bacanora, our local agave moonshine. We just took delivery of a gallon. The big green jug some of you know is full to the brim.

Other than the usual swapping of lies and drinking beer things to do include the nearby hot springs, our new hotel pool (hope it is warm.) If there is enough interest we can set up a visit to a rustic Bacanora still including a lunch prepared still-side and the opportunity to buy a bottle. There are some fun day rides, paved or what passes for pavement, up into the mountains. Horseback riding is a possibility but the ranch owners need advance notice since these will be real working horses used by los vaqueros. Depending on how many people show an interest we may be able to plan a performance by our internationally known folk dance group. I have a couple of guitars. I will get the costs for these activities if there is enough interest. We don't mark these up, it all goes to our neighbors who provide the services.

Banamichi is a good kick off point for Copper Canyon and points south and also for the ferries to Baja from Guaymas, Topolobampo or Mazatlan. We are between Mex 16 and Mex 17.

There are about 40 hotels rooms in town, Los Arcos has the 11 best. with secure parking and a pool. You get to choose your lodging. We can help with other hotels and we don't take a cut. There is camping available near by.

This is an informal type of thing. Filling our hotel rooms and restaurant is great but that's not what's behind this. I'm looking to introduce more riders to our area, to Mexico and get to meet some of you I only know online and get to see some of you who have been here before again.

I will cross post to the other Mexico threads and open a new thread. Hoping for lots of interest so we can make this a reality.
