Can anyone recommend a decent helmet cam? I want one that will clip to the helmet with a decent battery life and obviously not too expensive. I would prefer a side mount rather than a top mount. Any suggestions?

What is your definition of "not too expensive?"

Don't really want to spend more than a couple of hundred dollars.

the gopro hd cameras are pretty versatile, although dorky looking. Lots of mounting options. With the new model out the gopro hero 2 is going pretty cheap. There are threads about most helmet cameras.

I have both the contour and a couple of Gopro HD's... both can be found in your price range. The GoPro takes better video, but it is ugly, big and will catch branches if worn on your helmet in wooded areas. It is also a PITA to turn on and off so you end up leaving it on all the time which results in hours of useless video that you have to wade through in the editing process. The Contour is sleeker and turns on and off with the single slide of big switch. Unless you are making production quality vids, I would recommend the contour for Youtube stuff.

Thanks for that. Sounds like the Contour is the way ahead. Cheers!

I'm currently riding in Central America and chose the Contour because I didn't want to look like a teletubby. I have traveled through Guatemala before and they are sketchy about photography and I wanted something that was less obvious and intrusive. Wished I had both though. The Contour mounted to the top of the brain bucket and maybe two GoPro mounted for front of the bike and the second for rear view. I have also tried to surf in El Salvador and some of the surfboards have mounts for the GoPro but not for the Contour. Wanted to video a little of that kind of action, but alas cannot have it all, yet, LOL. I think it's working pretty good, I think the GoPro has a little better quality of video and the option of taking still photos is nice, but didn't want something that was so complicated to operate. Plus where I bought it gave me a discount, that always helps.

Had a GoPro, but the mount broke and I lost it. Replaced it with a Drift, Nice camera with remote. Best choice if you want to mount the camera in a remote location. But if you want a camera for your helmet, Contour is the way to go because you can easily turn it on & off with a sliding switch. The others require you to hold down a button and then your never really sure if it's on or off without a visual check. I've found that things I want to get video of often come up fast. The contour is best suited for this.

Why don't you just go to the Contour webpage and check out all the options? Their photos are a lot more descriptive than words.
