85 GLI I picked up for 1k$ I just lost 4th gear, so i have to tear apart the engine and swap the shift forks. 85 GLA I picked up for 9hun. Everything works on it, and just needed a few details cleaned up like contacts, but everything works on it. I have a lead on a friends 85 GLi that doesn't shift out of first. We think it's the spring, but he doesn't want to mess with it, so I will. and -10 for changing the rear wheel on the 12's. have to pull the side cases, rear fender, pull the bottom shock bolts, jimmy the swingarm up to get the axle bolt out.... what a hassle.
Had to do the same thing with my old airhead, course the bags came off quite a bit easier :) but it is a pain. Those old 1200 are nice bikes, mine still handles traveling like it did back in it's day. Sporty enough to be fun in the twisties, comfortable to ride all day, and enough power to haul more stuff that you should on a motorcycle :) My 84 Aspy
...And just where do I find this forum? I just bought an '83' Now affectionately referred to as The "Big Brown Turd" Soon to Be reborn as "FrankenWing" So, Where/How do I find this forum?
I stopped by a Honda dealer last week to kill some time between meetings, and they had three leftover 2010 GWs, all loaded and all in a department-of-public-works yellow color I really like. Anybody ever gone from an R1200RT to a Gold Wing and not regretted it?
that GL have the "WOW" factor, it was well done, I'm sure lot of hours and money went to it.! But still, COMPLETELY USELESS and POINTLESS IMO
Most reliable bike I have ever owned. 100,000 miles and no issues. I bought it to be sure to eliminate mechanical problems from my chances in the IBR. In 2005 the only issue was the plastic latch on the rear passenger arm rest broke. In 2007 It saved my ass when I bounced off a moose in the dark in New Brunswick. I rode it home via Alaska (leg 3) and St. Louis (finish) . It was written off when I got back to Vancouver with a bent frame. Not many bikes can do that. Did I buy another one? No because it didn't give me the ride I wanted, it was simply a 2 wheeled Accord. Hence the KTM - God's motorcycle
Where's the goldwings pulling a dual sport? I'm going to make a trailer and would like some inspiration....
this is not the one you are talking about, but still it may inspire you!! :) http://www.supermotojunkie.com/showthread.php?85908-My-Goldwing-Tow-Vehicle
I've had two Wings, a 1986 1200 Aspencade, and the 1991 1500 Aspencade that I've had for years. I've done so much to my 1500 over the years, it is perfectly set up for me. It is a mile eater of a bike. Comfortable, fast enough for me and reliable as a stone. I don't believe I will ever sell this bike. I really like the 1500 version of the Goldwing. I have all the room to streach out, and it has great weather protection too. I like Hondas flat six so much, that when I found a 1997 standard Valkyrie two years ago, I bought it. A Goldwing on steriods. Both of those go well with my KLR too. Got all the bases covered. Touring, Hotrod cruiser, Dual Sport. Life is good. Goldwing Valkyrie KLR
Awesome stable selection in my opinion. I have a 99' Valk an 02' BMW GS and a 87' KX500 gotta love a good selection. But I want a goldwing. 15 or 18, will be fine.
Thanks. I really like all of them. A bike for every purpose. Keep looking for that Wing. They are out there. Find a clean one, without a lot of crap on it and set it up for you. Take your time setting it up and ride it. The bike will be there, Wings that are taken care of last forever. You know that with your Valkyrie. You'll find out what you need and what you don't. Thats what I did with my 1500. It just plain works for me. Very comfortable, safe, user friendly, reliable bike. Looks good too, IMO.
I think I may be getting a Wing ('08?) in the shop next week that needs the stator replaced. He already has the part, so suspect it's an OEM version and subject to failure too. He rides year round if the roads are clear of snow, sometimes 2-up, so I know the system is probably cranking out the watts for two heated vests/jackets, gloves, grips, etc. I'll see if I can talk him into trying to return the original (assuming still in plain brown wrapper), and opt for a Compufire.
My friend with an 1800 seems to think there is a true cartridge conversion front fork system available for this bike. The only things I have seen are the emulators from someone like Race Tech: http://www.racetech.com/page/id/58 Is there something else out there I haven't heard about??
