    Could someone explain how scoring works between different categories in the same class?

    The news broadcasts seem to imply that all cars compete against each other - the same for trucks. Yet, in cars class, there is the Improved and Production category, as well as Open. (By the way, where does the Hummer Buggy fit?)

    Is there one winner in each class, or are there separate winners in each subcategory? What category are the main competitors, the Minis, Toyotas and the now-departed Tuaregs?

    Tnx, Robert.

    I've been trying to follow it but I only get it on NBC Sports channel at 1:30am. The bike class is limited to 450cc so there are no beemers.

    I don't know... :evil Does this ADVrider thread count as "anybody"? I don't know how you missed it: now about 10,000-posts long...

    You may want to move your question there - that is where the Dakar discussion goes on. This is thread is just about the rules.

    The BMW G450 was entered until last year, but the bike has been discontinued; it lives on in the Husqvarnas.

    The marathon stage means that the riders will bivouac away from their teams and will only get a truck a la the Malles Motos competitors. All service/repairs performed by the riders themselves. As far as I know, they are only allowed whatever their single ASO trunk that every rider gets will hold plus a pair of spare wheels.

    DSS = Start of the special stage
    SS = Special stage
    ASS = Finish of the special stage

    Someone can help me with the french acronym. :deal

    Special stage are where the racing happens. The liasons link stages to the bivouacs and have to be done in a maximum time (normally the time needed for travelling at a reasonable law-abiding pace from A to B). Its not timed but you have to do it within the maximum time, and this is also the most overlooked part of any rally. Peopel focus on the specials, but its the liaisons on the longer rallies that really wear riders out because theyre sometimes hundreds of km. On this rally the liaisons aren't too bad.

    As for the others - They come off the official FIM lexicon which has all the comes you will find in a road book on which the guys have to navigate:

    Pilots (riders) know these lexicons off pat because they have to read them at a glance at the road book -

    So knowing that the ASO uses IriTrack and that IriTrack is used by most all the other rallies to see the positions of the riders such as here, and knowing that I have seen similar screens used by the ASO personnel, there has to be someone that can do some digging and find the super secret ASO only data, right? Mischa?

    I've tried a bunch of URL's but no luck. It's gotta be out there somewhere.:lol3
