I may as well be out on that happening since it seem that shindig's theme is leaning heavy to drinking, and I don't, so I won't.

So far I've liked the advice I've gotten on gear to get, love the Kilmanjaro jacket, and the TPG pants look fantastic, even if I do have to exchange them bigger Decided on the Scout boots and they're waiting in my shopping cart.

Tell me about helmets guys. Is a dualsport helmet with a visor a definite plus/gotta have thing or what?
What price point would you stay above and/or brands would you stay away from? I realize the better ones are better, still trying to balance my options here. Thanks.''

Might as well throw some winter gloves opinions in here too if you would.

I figure your head and it's contents are worth whatever you're willing to throw at them. What's your head worth to you? I worked years ago with people who had suffered traumatic brain injuries. Not a place you want to be if you can help it.

Another aspect is fit. Different people have different shaped heads and different brands fit differently. I just plain don't fit into a Shoei. Arai, on the other hand, fit me better, but only once I customize the padding. HJCs used to fit me pretty good, but not so much any more...

I have an Arai XD3. It used to fog up way too easy, but it's much improved since I got a pinlock antifog shield and I love it. I also have an HJC which is a lot cheaper, but good for my commute

Try on a variety and get the best you can afford.

no opinion on the value of the dualsport helmet visors?

I like my Icon with the visor, and I like all my dirtbike helmets with visors. they block the sun when you want that.

I have had several over the years,,high dollar to discount.
Have the BILT explorer I bought for $100 ,,fits okay, good wide visibility, lightweight,, guaranteed!,,and only a hunnert bucks at the time..It is missing a small screw from the visor,, I should take it back and get a new one!
My $530 Arai XD, as VDuckevinfelixhelix mentioned,,worst fogging visor I have ever ridden inside!
I was amazed that such a high end helmet had such poor visual distortion as well,, the face shield is good,, all the way up, or all the way down,,but crack it open a bit and it's like looking thru water, and the angular distortion inherent from same. and just horrible at night!
At less than half the cost, my old HJC never did that.
Nor does this El Cheapo cycle gear hat.
The peak over the visor,,(the bill on a ballcap) is really nice to have when you are riding in sunny directions!,,the Arai has a great one, the Bilt variety could be a bit longer, and other than that, you can add an aftermnarket peak to any helmet, with snaps riveted on.
Find a store with a good selection and try them all on,,but here in duck town that means hitting ALL the possible stores,,choices are limited for testing and trying on.
Start at the BMW boutique on W 11th,, ask to see the most expensive hat in the store,,,then shop from there,,

"Dual Sport" helmets have a peak (bill) and a visor (windshield).. Lotsa guys like using an MX helmet with goggles. A good idea when it's dusty. I've managed pretty well with my dual sport hat. I've got goggles, but used them only once... Haven't really taken the time to figure out how they work over glasses.

Speed and Strength opinions? They run just below middle in the price wars it seems.

Yeah,...they rip your head off at around 90mph.
Thank goodness they're removable.

I still like the DS helmet (mine's a Shoei Hornet DS) due to the big nose/mouth space for breathing and less fogging, AND the full street-size visor for full insect & dirt protection. I never could get into the dirt-bike helmet w/ goggles thing.

The Icon bill is pretty innocuous at speed, and AJ has a good point on the nose/mouth space- makes eating corn dogs on the move easier

I once had a bike that would go 180,,,

Helmets

I have a bunch of different Helmets. I love the Dualsport style hats. I have a Shoei Hornet, love the way it fits but it is a foggy sucker in wet weather. Pin Lock is a must. I also have a Bilt Explorer that was free with a jacket purchase. Normally around a hundred dollars. I had low expectations but it has really surprised me. The cheap hats still have to pass the same testing the expensive ones do. They are made from lower end materials and wear out faster. I also have a Shoei Modular, great hat but I really miss the visor. I also bought us a set of AFX open face hats with visors, face shields and drop down sun shields. They are pretty trick and work well for an open face hat. We use them in the Sand Car mostly. I have used it a few times on the Ural and it was fine.

Winter Gloves

I use a modular approach. Klim Motocross glove inside of an extra large pair of Aerostich Buckskins. I run hand protectors on the bars also. If I am going to spend all day in the rain I will add a big pair of Concrete worker rubber gloves for waterproofness. I have spent a metric ton on fancy ass gortex gauntlet gloves and all have fallen short. I also run grip heaters on part of the bikes.

an overglove made about like the latex stretchies but with tear resistance that would pull right over your reggalar gloves seem like would work for rainforest living
