I'm looking at a 2003 and 2004 R 1150RT/P (former police bikes). Any mechanical/design differences between the "RT/P" and the consumer "RT" model that I should be aware of? Known issues? Any comments from current/previous 1150RT/P users would also be appreciated... Thanks, Chris
bigger alternator and very accurate speedo methinks. i think the gearbox is the same, but not sure. try these: http://www.rtp.autobahnpolizei.de/index.php?lang=eng http://jeffdean2.home.att.net/rtp5.htm for more info.
Gearbox is the same AFAIK. RTPs have a different electrical system with a second battery because they can't be left running. Servo systems are pants, but can be lived with. Wouldn't like to pay for my own repairs to them though. Other differences are the single seat and should still have the all round crash protection. Wiring loom is likely to have been butchered to remove the surplus power drains. Make sure you don't get an 850 Oh, and clutches get a hard time too, and aren't very cheap to replace. They also have bugger all ground clearance so check the underside (sump, exhaust and bodywork) for kerbing damage.
Bigger alternator 2 batteries Some have Euroswitch for lights which allows turning lights off when running Run-flat tires Very precise speedometer Oil cooler fan for riding in traffic Mine's a 2002
If you look at the BMW pages, the RT-P is not that much different in price than a regular 1200RT... Can anyone buy one ? I deal with them at work... and I want one of my own
I am reletively new to riding. I had a Shadow 650 for a while. I had an accident and I stayed away from riding. @ a month ago I got the bug again, so I started looking for something with more authority. I found it in my new bike. I had a couple of questions though. 1.The red brake light flashes when I turn the bike on. When I put it into gear, it goes away. Is that normal? 2.Does anyone know where I can find an owners manual? I've beem looking everywhere. I found the P" suppliment, but not the RT manual. 3.When I hold the brake when the bike isn't moving I can hear a loud "whirring" sound. I have been told that this is normal. Thanks again for your patience with the new guy
Thats just the abs light...and that is normal...I thought I remembered it being orange though(I had an 02). And I have a brand new Haynes manual for one...PM me if your interested.
Adjustable seat (3 positions), adjustable power windshield, integrated fog lights. ABS light blinks after start until you start moving (about 3mph/5Kmh - pull away test for ABS) 2004 R1150RTP has different gearbox (lower 1-st gear, sport 6-th gear), police front shock absorber, jump start lugs, extra police relays and fuses, 12v standard power outlet, etc. Brochure www.brownmotorworks.net/brochure/R1150RTP_Brochure.pdf You can find manual on www.bmwmc.net -> Technical information -> Repair manuals -> R1150RT-P (There are more useful information on this website).
How do you remove front sub frame where front crush bars are mounted? I was trying to remove alternator cover (on front side of the engine) to have access to a crankshaft pulley, but could not remove it. Crash bars' sub frame is on the way. It looks like, if you need to have access to the front of the engine, you need to remove this sub frame. But to remove crash bars' sub frame, it is need to remove exhaust manifold :eek1 Does anybody knows some tricks or simpler way to deal with it?
Why not? You will not be able to get "for police use only" extras (like emergency lites, siren, etc). It is better to ask BMW dealer.
Yes, you remove the exhaust manifold. It's not difficult. I have replaced an alternator belt on one in an emergency without removing the cover because you can slide the cover mostly out of the way.
Some of VINs are in database. Usually these are units involved in a crush with other civilian vehicle. I suspect, car insurance company wants VIN and the record goes through database. Usually, you will not find any information about VIN (it say incorrect VIN). When I was looking to buy BMW police motor on eBay, I found information through one of VIN search web sites that this unit was involved in a crush. But it was already visible on the pictures Another unit was damaged too, but no information in database. Just do a free VIN search. If search return some result, and you buy the bike from government action (or from police department), more likely it had a crush. If no others (civilian) vehicles were involved in the crush, you will not find any information about it by searching VIN If police motor has changed ownership and was registered for civilian use, it might be in database (more likely).
Thanks, Anorak! I was unable to move cover out of the way last time, and I did not want to force it... Next time, I will need to do it "hard/proper way" by removing manifold.
