Rode my URAL Rig to Valdez, AK today along the Glenn and Richardson Highways....gorgeous mountain views were the offerings of the day.... http://redlegsrides.blogspot.com/2013/05/uraling-to-alaska-day-37-richardson.html
Valencia is starting to show a well earned "road patina"! Thanks for the blog link, it is great to keep up on your trials and travels. I think the (day 38) blog reply in regards to the coil may be something to really consider.
yep, leaning towards the coil myself. parts will be here this Saturday by 3PM per USPS anyways....I'll replace the coil first, leaving the other parts in place and see if that was the issue. fellow ADV rider just showed up in Valdez tonight....from WA on a KLR 650, he reported Thompson Pass as wet but passable. So if I can get the rig running.....I might actually make McCarthy.
parts for the powerarc ignition have arrived, have installed the coil only for now.....one part at a time, till I figure out which one doesn't like wet weather. the coil being outside, is the primary suspect. link to today's posting
today's ride from Valdez to Wasilla....thinking of Whittier in a day or so. http://redlegsrides.blogspot.com/2013/05/uraling-in-alaska-day-41-valdez-to.html
Hi Deb, here's the links for today's riding and yesterday's meetup: Meeting new friends in Tok riding to Haines Junction
Leaving Alaska on the ferry from Haines, AK tonight. Here's my last posting: Last posting from Alaska
thanks Brad....where are you posting your pics btw? now cruising down the pacific coast highway.....not much to report about the scenery in WA but Oregon is doing OK so far.....
Not really posting any, no laptop! I did throw a couple iPhone pics up on FB. The Dalton is done, out to circle today. Gotta drop down and do the Denali hwy, then up to Chicken, then the Dempster and finally homeward bound!!
closing out this thread..... Ferry ride out of Alaska and back to the lower 48 was a great choice IMHO. Learned many things about my URAL, how tough it is and how supportive the company is. Still got a ways to go but they're sure trying! I can't think of another marque who stand behind their bikes as URAL does. Alaska is a beautiful state, but there's not that many roads and distances are long in between sites at times. Beautiful mountains, so many in fact that you can get jaded to their beauty after a while. Friendly people, who believe in helping out when needed and leaving people alone when not. The humidity in the state is higher than my home state of Colorado, same temperatures where me and my cold weather gear were "comfortable" in Colorado, felt colder in Alaska. The roads in the state and in Canada will chew up a sidecar's pusher tire like nowhere else I've ridden! Everyone recommends the use of HEET or similar fuel additives to deal with moisture accumulation in one's fuel tank. I stayed with the stock jets on my Keihin Carburetors and didn't have issues once down at sea level. Same jets do fine on Colorado's higher mountain passes and peaks. Next time I go to Alaska, will take the ferry up from Bellingham to Whittier....I've ridden part of the Alcan and the Cassiar....no need to repeat same in my mind. Atigun Pass is for that next trip....Fairbanks was as far north as I chose to go. Being there in late April this year was a bit too early. Same thing for the Denali Highway, it was still closed when I left Alaska in late May. Yep, missed a lot of "must see", "must ride" spots/roads.....but no regrets. Glad I did the month long riding in Alaska....now heading home. more on the blog: http://redlegsrides.blogspot.com thank you to all who commented.
Well Done! Having travelled some of those places(not on motorcycle) I have quietly been following along enjoying your pics and commentary. Thanks for taking the time to post.
Glad you made it back down Dom. There was a lot I missed last year when I took the GS rig up there but that just means I have to go back.
Dom Thanks for taking the time to post your report from the road. Takes a lot of time when you are tired at the end of the day. Is greatly appreciated to be able to read it "live". CCjon
Great pics. Could be a great ad for Ural. Thanks for the memories. The wife and I took 2 Urals with 2 dogs up to Alaska, (Arctic Circle), from CA. and back in 2009.
My wife and I took a R65 as far as Coldfoot then to Yukon City and California from Tennessee and NH. Brings back memories but your photos do make me a bit jealous. Maybe need to learn more than point and shoot.
closing out this thread with a youtube video, it's a compilation of photos taken during the trip to alaska and back. http://youtu.be/5Tw42fC0TZY
