Finally I put down a deposit on a 2nd hand XT1200 2010 model with 6500 km`s on the clock (4060 miles). Been lurking to get one even before they were released and it took me awhile. Many bikes I got problem not being smooth which means uncomfortable feeling in my hands even long time after the ride. Maybe the bike is to "new" and will get smoother after some time. Will put foam grips on. It does have Pro Taper bars which might not be the best. Heard about some kind of system that got rubber mounted handlebars, could be something? Otherwise the XT1200 is an awesome bike and pretty sure it will easily replace my DL650. It also been approved by my ms which means a lot! Was thinking about the new KTM1190 but could not justify more than double the price and go bush with a $25000 bike does not really go well in my book. Some issues I should look at when purchasing a 2nd hand XT1200? I`m quite excited to have this bike in my stable and keep the others company. It does come with Yamaha crash bars, sump guard and panniers/box all for under 1/2 price compared to the KTM1190, of course no warranty but that is the risk you take I guess. Yamaha does have a good reliability history though so it all should be ok. You will hear from me more in a near future! Cheers.
No thanks! Just have to accept that we all getting older at least body wise. Can not wait until I pick her up and take her in the bush. Believe we will have a great time together.
http://roxspeedfx.com/product/anti-vibe-anti-vibration-risers.htm These are nice and soften the vibes a bit, rather expensive though. Longer brake and clutch lines probably needed. Add Progrip 714 grips and even less vibrations.
Also heard about precision handlebar mounts. Will start with foam grip and take it from there, might get used to the vibes on this excellent machine.
the pro taper will be a much better bar, than the stock. I run bmw grips on mine (the old school ones, fat on one end, and thinner on the other) with rox 1.75" risers (non dampened) no complaints, just came back from a 3000km spin around California. No issues. enjoy the bike oh yeah, trip write up here: http://thetenerist.wordpress.com/2013/03/22/california-2013/
Does it vibe enough to shake the mirrows? Mine has minimal feel of vibes in the bars. Maybe there is something wrong. Try another ST if you can. This engine has two counter balance shafts and if it is off that my be your problem. The bars should not be buzzy.
You mentioned going bush and your XT has the Yammy sump guard? Get a Rumbux or RideOnADV to keep the oil inside the motor. I mention those two in particular because those are the only ones I'm aware of that mount to the frame without any motor contact, essential for proper protection. As for vibration you should spend a bit of time here: http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/ THE BEST resource on the web. And there are two huge threads in Beasts that cover the XT with many experienced owners willing to help. I think it has been mentioned the bike gets smoother in the 6000 mile range. Be sure proper tuning has been done to put aside out of balance fueling. I don't know if this has been mentioned or would be a problem for the XT but there are instances of vibration caused by improperly torqued motor mounts. Just a thought if no other solution is found. Be sure to check your spokes although those should have bedded in long ago but worth the time. Other than the sump guard and maybe some protection for the fork seals to give them longer life I can't think of any reliability problems with the XT12Z. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=545850 http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=592384
Got my eyes on the ACD sump guard from Spain, looks good and tough! I`m sure the vibe problems will disappear/become less the more I ride this amazing machine. Need to find out how to put heavier bar end weights than the stock ones. Put it on a couple of other bikes which did help to some degree. Cheers!
Thats exactly what I was gonna say. After I take a ride on my 660 and my ST feels like a Cadillac. I had a 1200GS and 950ADV prior to owning my ST and the ST is no worse/better than either of those.
Mate I am at Clayfield.. PM me and we'll go for a coffee and I would be happy to give you some tips based on my 7K with the Super 10! M
Still own the bike and still have vibes but since swapping with my other bikes I can survive, still thinking about other bikes but will cost a lot to trade, will the clutch basket really make vibes less?
Yamaha updated the clutch basket for the Gen 2 (‘14 & newer) models in part to reduce vibration. Maybe an updated basket would fix your vibes?
I have been thinking about it for years but if trying it and not working.... another $500-1000, already spend a lot trying to fix this issue, but new bike cost more and even though I like the nee GSA/Triumph Explorer with shaft it is still not a Yama but would be nice if they release one with a bit more mods than the 2014 compared to my 2010.
I was waiting for the 2014 update but never really came. Just knew if I bought the '14 they would change it next year and I'd have to trade again. So , here in almost '21 still waiting and I think they have lost this sale. Some nice new options out there. I have a nice bike to ride in the meantime, so just waiting for now. Getting pretty old and figure this will be my last new bike. Sure like to make the right choice.
Personally I think the ST is a very good bike maybe too good at most things so it is a bit boring but its ok since I got other bikes, what I do not like is that they could not build a bike with less vibration and it is not only me that complaining about it. Will try new GSA 2021, looked at new Triumph Explorer but they say it is a bit top heavy what else to choose from if you want a shaft drive?
