2013 KTM Adventure 1190

I would like the same power to weight ratio but at 100 lbs less overall porkage.

So I was at my dealer today dropping off the bike for the 45k service and after telling him I would like a rear brake again and a few other minor things that I am too lazy/busy/garageless to do myself we get into some small talk. Just a very idle thought on my part, I say as I walk around a 350 Freeride sitting on the floor, is the idea to downgrade to a 690R...

Wait two years he says, a 750 twin is coming.

Hmmm, probably about as reliable as the lottery numbers my neighbor's dog wrote down for me, but fun to speculate about nonetheless and a glimmer of hope that maybe, maybe, maybe, one manufacturer will finally be brave enough and end the up-sizing stupidity we call marketing. Sure KTM will probably market a 150hp 1290cc too, but I don't care as long as they offer it along side a 200kg, 25litre, 85hp twin, with 250mm or so of fully adjustable travel front and rear...

That gives me two more years of riding the 990, and then, just as I am getting too old and frail to pick it up again, I can "upgrade" to a lighter bike. How perfect is that?

In about two more years I'll be ready to go with an Adventure lite... And by then my current ride will be completely farkled to death and I'll need another project.

I just really have a hard time wrapping my head around... the why? My 990 is soooo much fun, why bigger? More weight, less fuel economy, I just don't see why, I understand the "need" to go after the 1200GS, but lets face it the GS is a pig. The 990 is sweet dirt bike.

Probably because it comes in last or last-but-one in all the print magazine "adventure bike" shootouts. Clearly most people reading this forum have a different definition of adventure. Vague feeling of 21" front and lack of power compared to the Multistrada , Super Tenere etc are the frequent complaints.

I've heard there is a big KTM Dealershow in Sacramento from June 24-27. Do you think they will announce the new Adventure?

I was about ready to pull the trigger on a new 990 Adventure, but think I will hold off to see what my options are. If nothing else the new / left over 990s may drop in price? I found a couple at $1,000 off ($13,999). Still lots of bang for the buck, though...

Not always - MotorCycleNews (in the UK) did a 'proper' adventure bike test a week or so back including some real offroad stuff (as opposed to a quick spin around a gravel car park.

990 Adv, Yamaha Super Ten, Triumph Adventurer and BMW GS. Yamaha cracked it's sump on the first trail, BMW retired hurt on the first day with an oil leak, and the Triumph broke a lever (not normally too much of a problem but it was a brand new model and there were no spare levers in the country ......).

Those tyres look like Tourance EXPs, so my guess is 17" rear and 19" front.

I don't know about that... my RC8R gets high 30's flogging it and mid 40's when not. Maybe the dual spark of the '11+ engine is a bit more thrifty, but I have been really surprised by the fuel economy considering what it is and the enormous torque it has.
