Not sure if others will find this helpful but I use this little page of mine to get GPS coordinates or to find them quickly. Someone asks "you got the coordinates of that?" So I navigate to this page and find them... especially helpful if I don't have Mapsource handy.

I'm planning a trip in May and I've converted a route to a track in wingdb3. It's 10200 or so track points. My Garmin Oregon can only show 10000 points so my track ends before the end. I know I can split the route, but I just filtered in mapsource under track properties the 'distance' to 300ft. This cut my points to about 4600.

Is this a good way to get under the 10000 limit? I'm sure there's better ways so any advice would be appreciated.

Other than breaking into track segments (recommended) you can try the following. (I'd make a back up of the track and save it somewhere first)

Open the track in MapSource then go to: Track Properties (right click on the route)>Filter>Apply Filter (tick entire track)>Automatic>slide the slider to fewer points>Click Ok>Click ok again.

If you do this the lines will straighten (as you might expect) but the track will parallel your roads and it will be obvious where you need to turn. However at speed it might be tricky in some places.

I would also do a short route to track conversion near your home, then filter it using the above technique and try running it to see if you can live with the results PRIOR to your big trip.

In the past I've done a couple of experiments using Mapsource, BaseCamp and WinDB3 to filter down tracks and have found the filtering function in WinDB3 to be much better than Mapsource or BaseCamp in maintaining fidelity to the original unfiltered track.

Starting with a 1,000 point track I have found that BaseCamp and Mapsource both begin to lose significant fidelity at the 750 point level while WinDB3 maintained fidelity all the way down to the 500 point level.

No matter what you do it is best to check them using contrasting colors in Mapsource or BaseCamp before you venture out.

Your tutorials have been a revelation to me, learnt more in an hour going through the tutorials than i did in weeks fiddling with the bloody thing.

So I visited the OSM website to D/L some base maps for my copy of MapSource. I followed their directions, picked and chose some N. Georgia, W. North Carolina and NE Alabama map tiles. When they sent me the link to D/L the query, here's what I got when I opened the maps:





Any idea what all that red-horizontal/black-vertical cross-hatching is, and how I could get rid of it? It makes the maps very hard to decipher. And why does it only happen inside the state lines of GA?!?

I am at loss as to what the hatch marks mean. I am sure someone will know though and will chime in shortly.

Can someone tell me (In layman's terms) how to isolate a specific active log from a gpx file.

A fellow inmate sent me his track logs in 1 file, I am only interested in Active Log 007, out of about a dozen of them. Is there a way to isolate, or separate this specific log? I'd like to be able to save it as a separate file so that I can attach that file to an email for forwarding.
