i too went bigger. bought a 950 and after a year 1/2, sold the big bike. it's heavy and big for my kind of riding.
today, i still love my 640, it has taken me to a lot of different places, see my sig line. it's my trusty steed.

true, the bike is transitional, one day most of us will all be switching to another one. mine may last longer since i have a spare 640a that i use as my parts bike.....

the most valuable element on this thread is the people - always ready to help and provide reliable info....

that's one reason i hang out here more than in any other bike specific thread. thanks to meat and contributors.

the front wheel, i mean the hub, bearing and seal must be from a 525exc and using a bushing with a 20 mm bore to fit the 640 front fork.

boon boon, measure the bushing od, and if it is 26 mm, then our hunch is right.

if that's the case, you need the bearing and seals for the 525 exc, i have a 2003 (first year model) 525 exc and has 26mm axle.

NSFW, similar stories yours and mine with the 640A, will see how ends mine.
I would love to keep both, but my budget says NO.

I had an awesome experience in both 640 threads during 6 years, most of the guys here are incredible.

Hello fellow bloggers, hope this post is in the right place.

I need advice from the enlightened LC4 fetishist's.


I have a 1999 LC4 400D (UK) and use it for commuting and off roading. I have had the bike for 2 years now and have increased the mileage from 6500 miles in april 2010 to just under 15000 miles this week.

I am very particular about oil changes and have been using 10-40w semi synthetic with an interval of 1000 miles. Over the last 2 years and 8500 miles the oil changes have generated less and less swarf and shiny broken fragments to now where there is only a dusting of metal filings and a few chrome looking tiny slivers like glitter.

The reason for this thread, well something has changed in the engine. The sound is different, there is more top end clatter. The motor pulls strong and revs freely. I am concerned that something has begun to happen, and want to catch it before it gets expensive.

This engine has never been apart, it has the old style bearing still in there.

Everything looks nice and new. The bearing feels tight, and spins freely.

Should I replace that bearing with the new style one. I have the parts sat waiting, but cant see any point if the old one is good.

Secondly, should I take the top end apart, the clatter must come from there. How far should I tear it down. Just the lid off. I need to take the water pump out and sort this little problem.

Change your coolant. I reckon this is the original coolant. loops!

Hopefully there will not be any major issues, and the noise is just the engine maturing.

Any advice is very welcome. I would describe myself as a competent home mechanic. I have none of the specialist tools.

Have you checked the valve clearances lately? Often the first thing to wear out in these motors, at anything from your mileage up, will the inlet cam follower roller bearing - you'll be able to check that out when you pop the top to take out the water pump.

Valves checked 3000 miles ago. Needed little or no adjustment.

I think you are right, I will have to take the lid off and see what is under there.

Is taking the rocker cover off easier with the engine out? Or can it be done safely left in site?

You can remove the rocker cover with the engine in the frame. Just takes a bit more work, but not much.

There is plenty of details on this site about doing the job. At 15,000 miles, I wouldn't even bother about checking, just replace the inlet cam bearing. They can go to shit VERY quickly (mine went in a just over 700 kms and caused a large amount of damage).

Have a look in the index at some of creepers threads about sealing the rocker cover and also about a bolt that can make it look like your cover is leaking).

Good advice, I have now read those threads (in part) and can see that most of the questions have been answered already. A bad time to get parts for the LC4 what with Christmas coming!

Sincrosimon, if it turns out to be the intake roller going bad have a look at this.

Thank you guys for making me check my rocker bearings! Just saved myself some serious dough, the inlet one was close to going kaboom.

How does the cam look?
Do all the top end bearings while you are in there.........you should be able to find most of them at a bearing house.

Hopefully the great LC4 hivemind can help me, i`m looking at a 2007 450 SX-f muffler to replace the boat anchor hanging off my tail end right now. Anyone know about if the header sizes are similar to stock?

Big thanks for all this info. I've been shopping for a second front wheel on my 03 (to run street tires) for a couple of months. I knew I had the smaller axle but wasn't sure exactly how the setup changed with the wheel replacement.my assumption was that they used the 03 OEM hub with just a different rim, so my assumption was that the spacers I had were for a 20mm hub. Thus, I was shopping for a wheel with the old style hub. But seeing these pics make me realize i need to take it back apart to check the OD of the spacer because the top portion of the pic looks like what i remember seeing on mine. the bigger hub used on the newer bikes is good news for buying a new wheel. it opens up better options for buying much newer used.

ok so , i posted a little while ago in the ouch forum , and someone said i wasnt orange enough in my dedication , so i thought about it , and then hand painted my leg covers up .... !!!!! the only thing that could top it is a tattoo ....
