Here's and update on the 99 VFR I bought for $2600. I put 600 miles on it this week so its at 50,700 miles. It looks showroom new and has an impressive folder full of maintenance records, but I think I understand why the seller let it go cheap. Worn steering bearings take all the joy out of sporting riding. A bad thermostat keeps the ECU on the warm-up map and it only gets 32 mpg. The battery keeps going down due to a bad regulator. So I have all three things that tend to go bad on high milage VFRs. No problem! I'm gonna fix em all and put another 50K on this great machine.

After renting a VFR overseas several years ago have had my heart set on one. Found a mint '01 previously owned by a meticulous middle aged gent who bought it new. He put 12,800 miles on it over the eight years. Kept service records. He traded it for a Triumph Scrambler at my BMW/Triumph dealer and after mulling it over for a spell brought it home yesterday. Looks like it had just came out of the crate. Will probably swap out the exhaust can and that's about it. There's nothing like a VFR. Could be in the barn a looooong time.

I'm about your age, but unfortunately even with a modded riding position the VFR would cripple me.

The 2001 and older gear driven cam models are such an affordable/rideable classic !

I'd leave the oem exhaust can on, just to better hear that motor...
It's getting to the point nowadays, that hearing a bike with a stock exhaust go by, sounds so wonderfully sophisticated to me.

I had an '87 starting in about '89 and put 35K miles on it until 94, at which point I traded it for a new 94. Both great bikes, the '94 being truly excellent. Someday I'll have another.

After some minor deliberation I have decided that my next bike should be a VFR. Perusing some internet ads, I see that there are some good(?) deals on bikes with damaged fairings. I don't know right now whether I'd rather spent a little money money on a bike that had been dropped a time or 2 or whether I'd rather save a little more for a bike in nice shape. I'm also more interested in the 1998-2001 year range. Any VFRistas have advice about cosmetics?

I just went through similar deliberations. I specifically wanted a cheap 5th generation and looked at some bikes that had been down. It seemed somewhat difficult to find replacement VFR plastic at reasonable prices so instead I looked for a higher mileage example. You might consider this because some VFR owners take great care of their bikes and a clean high mileage one could be a better choice for the frugal budget.

That was the first thing I thought, too. But hey, the VFR really is a sweet ride.

Here is a picture of my 2000 VFR. I added a high mount Staintune, and stripped the black paint off the wheels.
I had a 95 R1100R previously, and was spoiled by the heated grips, so I installed a set on this bike.
The VFR is a comfortable bike. I am tall (6'3",) and the fit is very good.
